According to Ted Cruz, we're all one or the other, so I figure hey, might as well start a thread so people can get in on the ground floor.
Me, I'm wondering where the fuck he even learned the word "Menshevik"

(11,619 posts)They fought with the Bolsheviks. They advocated gradual development of full socialism through parliamentary government and cooperation with bourgeois parties, until they were defeated and absorbed into the Bolsheviks.

(1,484 posts)It probably came from one of his stoolie, staff, junior college graduates that he hired with all of his stuper-pac money.
I know it is rumored that he himself graduated from Oxford, but I find that almost as easy to believe as Tronald Trump's claim that his having been incarcerated in a military prep school qualifies him as having the experience to become "commander in chief."

(5,764 posts)If he meant liberals only, he's just calling us all commies. If he meant everyone, I don't think he understands either word.
As for myself, I think any kind of economic theory should be firmly grounded in science. If it is not, it's pure hogwash. And casting votes to determine our political destiny, is an absolute must.

There's not much room for nuance in a demolition-derby environment.

Err: We get checks from the government. And we use them to buy beer.

(58,785 posts)very smart -- brilliant -- and very well educated. He graduated cum laude from Princeton and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, was an editor of the Law Review -- and other very high-prestige competitive positions on legal journals!, and served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice Rehnquist. He wasn't very well liked in school, apparently, and regarded by some as odd and obnoxious, but that hasn't stopped him from going very far indeed.
I suspect, being The Anointed One, that he thought the religious right was his to pick up, not Carson's, but he'll be working on that.
In any case, my guess is Cruz could lecture off the cuff about mensheviks for several minutes without pausing. Widen it to Russian history in general, and no telling how long we'd be sitting there.

(33,688 posts)and there are no other plausible alternatives. He is either
1. A liar the proportions of which defy quantification, gulling the rubes for his own political ends,
or far, far more likely, he is
2. A genuinely clinical sociopath/psychopath who actually believes the schizoid horseshit that emanates from his noisehole.
I met one person I would label a clinical psychopath in my time at Harvard Law, but he wasn't a Princeton grad. The guy openly admitted after one too many beers he wanted to become an FBI or CIA agent because "I want to kill people for fun and get away with it." Naturally enough, he was a shrieking RWNJ product of Texas "Christian" University.

(58,785 posts)"dark triad" of personality disorders I don't really understand? In giving that another try, I ran across this: "A Narcissist, a Psychopath and a Machiavellian Walk into a Bar. The bartender asks, who has the darkest personality out of you three? The Narcissist says me, the Psychopath says, I dont care and the Mach says its whoever I want it to be."
Psychopathy used to be classed as "antisocial personality disorder," and I've found a lot of what would be scary stuff in a high-level politician searching that term. In any case, these guys are also very good liars. But not schizophrenic. They're completely sane.
Then, along the Social Dominance line of research, there's the "double high authoritarian" definition of very ruthless people who seek power and make really nasty political operators.
Cruz caught my attention because, with the right behaving the way it has been, I've been watching for a really dangerous leader to appear. Now I'm wondering about that nice-faced Rubio too. My guess is that Trump's probably a clinical narcissist who wants attention -- and to be liked -- a lot more than he wants presidential power. And who and what is Ben Carson really? Just a guy who wanted to sell books and finds himself off on Mr. Carson's Wild Ride? ??
Whatever. Like your Texas Christian guy at Harvard, the far right seems to provide an abundance of...interesting personalities.
