And to think I thought I despised Goldwater

I had no idea what hate was. I can't decide whom I hate more in this debate. I do recall a spirited dorm room discussion in the 70's about who was the worst Nazi in WWII. I would get the old gang together but half of them are Rethugs now that they made a few bucks.

several times..I was friendly with a couple of young Repubs and served at a dinner and met him on the Hill as well. I was too young to vote, but would never have voted for Goldwater anyway. But meeting him was a pleasure. He was warm and friendly, smart, funny and interested in what the kids were doing. The man was an honest conservative, a supporter of gay rights, abortion rights and separation of church and state.
Yeah, he was a war monger, and pretty nuts on a lot of things, but one thing he would always do was compromise. He loved America and, I think, Americans. Goldwater would have been disgusted by this bunch of candidates.

I was just saying the same thing to my dad on the phone last night while we were talking about the Republicans. We were saying that we THOUGHT we hated Tricky Dick Nixon. . . The ones today are far, far, far worse, and Nixon was GODAWFUL
