The Mystifying Support for the Confederate Flag in the Northeast Corner of a Union State

By Sam Allard

... In the wake of the massacre, Confederate flag supporters have crawled out of the woodwork, in Ohio and elsewhere ...

In Bucyrus, Ohio, in late August, a small group of local flag supporters held a parade that one organizer said wouldn't have been possible without the momentum generated by South Carolina ...

In Norwalk, Ohio (just south of Sandusky), a group called the North Central Ohio Confederate Supporters now hosts a monthly rally outside the Huron County Courthouse ...

... in Willoughby .. the local high school's mascot is the 'Rebel,' symbolized .. by a grimacing Confederate soldier. And there, the Confederate battle flag has long been embraced as a symbol of school pride ...

Slightly off-topic, but in my corner of rural North Carolina, I'm seeing several *more Confederate flags flying in front of neighbors' house After the momentum generated by South Carolina. They never cared to fly that flag Before Charleston, and now suddenly they're projecting or compensating, or whatever, by suddenly flying it now.

And speaking of confederate soldiers; there's a to-do right now south of us in Durham, NC, to take down the 'Silent Sam' Confederate soldier monument that stands outside of the county courthouse. We'll see what happens. I was raised in a county that has almost the exactly same Confederate monument (only older than Durham's) and I haven't heard if there are any moves to take that one down.

The Durham monument sits in front of what was once the county courthouse (now aka "the Old County Courthouse&quot , but a new courthouse was later built across the street, and more recently a still newer courthouse several blocks away

I don't know what will happen with the Durham monument. I'd probably spray-paint it with garish fluorescent colors, hang a "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle" sign on it, and move it down to the recycling center entrance --- but in a recent panic our whack-a-doodle legislature passed a law requiring their approval to do anything with these things

They are RACISTS!

The flag is only a symbol to them of their hatred of anyone that is not white.

There should be nothing "mystifying" about finding them anywhere.

End of fucking story.

It is, to them, an acceptable symbol of their racial hatred. I'm in SE Ohio and we've got a guy set up at an abandoned gas station selling VA battle flags. It's rural, it's for all intents and purposes, bible belt and gun loving and ignorant. We are right along The Old National Road and our town was very involved in Underground Railroad activity. Our actual history, btw. I take such pride in that, and to see these idgits without any firing neurons flying this flag of sedition makes me crazy.
