Paul Ryan Wants to Shut Down the Government, Permanently

Paul Ryan Wants to Shut Down the Government, Permanently
Posted: 10/26/2015 8:01 pm EDT Updated: 10/26/2015 8:59 pm EDT

In addition to wanting to privatize both Social Security and Medicare, Ryan has indicated that he essentially wants to shut down the federal government in the sense of taking away all of the money for the non-military portion of the budget.

Ryan has indicated that he does not want to see the military budget cut to any substantial degree. That leaves no money for the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, The Justice Department, infrastructure spending or anything else. Following Ryan's plan, in 35 years we would have nothing left over after paying for the military.

So what percent of people in this country know that the next Speaker of the House would like to permanently shut down most of the government? What percent even of elite, educated, policy types even know this fact? My guess is almost no one.....

This POS traitor is your new Speaker of the House!

Just so everyone understands, the republicans want to totally destroy all government functions except the money hungry MIC of course.

ALL OF IT! And here we waste billions trying to defend this country against foreign terrorists that are bent on our destruction when its the REPUBLICAN PARTY that is by far the biggest threat to all americans that aren't in the top 1%!

The man who supported the banker bailout now wants to shut the govt down. If he shuts down the govt because he doesn't want to pay for non military spending, how he is going to bailout his friends on wall street next time there is a crash?

The truth is that Paul Ryan is not as radical as some people make him out to be, from my impression of him, he seems to be a very mainstream, very pragmatic kind of person unlike some of the tea party guys. He may want to fund more military spending than domestic spending, but he doesn't want to shut the govt down.

You can still shower a lot of support to MIC, wall street, the banks without ever shutting down the govt. I don't know what makes you think that he would risk everything just to cut welfare spending. This is not how people like Paul Ryan work. They would cut a little in domestic spending while increase military and tax cuts for the rich, but they would not jeopardize the whole system just to cut welfare.

Sorry but I don't believe for a second that his desire is to shut govt down. He is a mainstream republican and his side is the one at war with the more extreme wing of the republican party. You know, the wingers who are more likely to want to shut down the govt.

politicians every once in a while try to play up to their crazy base? They don't actually mean it when they say they want to cut everything. You really think any republican could win an election if they seriously ran on shutting medicare and SS tomorrow? the same goes for welfare spending. You think companies like Walmart and McDonald's would sit idly by while the govt subsidy for their workers is removed?

They may say they want to cut and shutdown everything but everybody knows that they are not serious about it.

Shut down the offices of all Republican members of the House and Senate, and deny them access to the Capitol building, so that they can no longer participate in our government. Fire their staffs (see? we're saving money already!)

That way, they get to do what they want, and the Democrats who still think government serves a purpose can get on with making themselves useful by fulfilling that purpose.

would it be too much trouble for you to read the article before you spout off?

You demonstrate that you don't know a thing about it.

Dear Baker checked his numbers and facts carefully, and has a sterling reputation
for getting things right.

And you expect us to take your word for it against that of Dean?

I don't THINK so.

BTW, Dean's "Beat the Press" blog is well worth reading.

Yes, I didn't read the whole post just the portion posted in the OP, but I know Paul Ryan and the kind of republican he is and I can assure you that he is not at all interested in shutting down the govt (whole or part of it) because of differences in military spending. He is no Ted Cruz or liberty caucus type.

He is the type that always finds a way to create a bipartisan deal that avoids a shutdown. Bookmark this thread and if Paul Ryan is ever found to be responsible for a govt shutdown, I will donate $500 to a charity of your choosing and make a public apology for being wrong. He is not that type of republican, even when he threatens to shutdown the govt, it is a bluff to get the democrats to capitulate.

Thank you for the straight response.

I'd like to continue to have such frank discussions. No problem with sharp
disagreements.

The point about Ryan is primarily that his budget numbers really do not
add up, and he does not care. He is a fiscal and monetary fraud of the
highest order.

Baker is by no means the only one to check Ryan's numbers and find them
out there is fantasy land. Krugman did too.

I'd strongly urge you to read the critics before you make up your mind on Ryan.

And seriously, Baker is well worth reading on a number of issues. He was
one of the few who called the financial meltdown.

But of course the spineless, brainless media won't press him on it..they'll just let him get away with pandering to the tea party whackos, while he's got a fence post jammed up his ass from so much straddling. If we had a real media, here are just a few of hundreds of questions they could ask:

How exactly would he propose collecting money for the military with no Treasury Department?

Does he propose dissolving the State Department, and having no embassies, no ambassadors and no foreign relations other than dropping bombs?

Does he propose ending all intelligence gathering and anti-terrorist functions that don't involve the military (FBI, CIA, NSA, etc).

Does he propose stopping all investigation and prosecution of federal crimes, and releasing everyone housed in federal pententiaries, once the Justice Department is shut down?

Paul Ryan: Randian poseur
Mitt Romney couldn't have chosen a better example of the fakery at the heart of today's GOP

Paul Ryan was born into a well-to-do Janesville, Wisc. family, part of the so-called “Irish mafia” that’s run the city’s construction industry since the 19th century. When his lawyer father died young, sadly, the high-school aged Ryan received Social Security survivor benefits. But they didn’t go directly to supporting his family; by his own account, he banked them for college. He went to Miami University of Ohio, paying twice as much tuition as an Ohio resident would have; the in-state University of Wisconsin system (which I attended) apparently wasn’t good enough for Ryan. After his government-subsidized out-of-state education, the pride of Janesville left college and went to work for government, where he’s spent his entire career, first serving Republican legislators and then in his own Congressional seat, with occasional stints at his family-owned construction business when he needed a job (reportedly he also drove an Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile for a while).

Ironically, Ryan came to national attention trying to dismantle the very program that helped him go to the college of his choice, pushing an even more radical version of President Bush’s Social Security privatization plan, which failed. He has since become the scourge of the welfare state, a man wholly supported by government who preaches against the evils of government support. He could be the poster boy for President Obama’s supposedly controversial oration about how we all owe our success to some combination of our own hard work, family backing and government support. Let’s say it together: You didn’t build that career by yourself, Congressman Ryan.

Thus Paul Ryan represents the fakery at the heart of the Republican project today. It starts with the contradiction that Mr. Free Enterprise has spent his life in the bosom of government, enjoying the added protection of wingnut welfare benefactors like the Koch brothers. If Herman Cain is Charles and David Koch’s “brother from another mother,” as he famously joked, Ryan is the fourth Koch, swaddled in support from Americans for Prosperity and other Koch fronts. The man who wants to make the world safe for swashbuckling, risk-taking capitalists hasn’t spent a day at economic risk in his entire life.

The other component of GOP fakery Ryan exemplifies is the notion that a pampered scion of a construction empire who has spent his life supported by government somehow represents the “white working class,” by virtue of the demographics of his gradually gerrymandered blue collar district. I write about this in my book: guys like Ryan (and his Irish Catholic GOP confrere Pat Buchanan) somehow become the political face of the white working class when they never spent a day in that class in their life. Their only tether to it is their remarkable ability to tap into the economic anxiety of working class whites and steer it toward paranoia that their troubles are the fault of “other” people – the slackers and the moochers, Ayn Rand’s famous “parasites.” Since the ’60s, those parasites are most frequently understood to be African American or Latino – but they’re always understood to be the “lesser-than” folks, morally, intellectually and genetically weaker than the rest of us.

Today, though, the “parasites” Republicans rail against also happen to be white. Ryan’s intellectual soulmate Charles Murray, of course, has shown that the struggling white working class is now besieged by the same bad morals that dragged down African Americans – laziness, promiscuity and a preference for welfare over work. Ryan himself rails against the “takers” who are living off the “makers.” And while in the realm of dog whistle politics, many Republicans hope working class whites still see the takers as “other,” in fact, Ryan’s definition of “taker” includes much of the GOP base. It’s up to Democrats to make that plain to the electorate......

When this guy becomes Speaker, shit is gonna get UGLY. Watch him ignore the fact that he's gotten a government check all his life, as he tries to take government checks from people who really need them.
