METAIRIE, La. - The race for governor took a strange twist Friday when Sheriff Newell Normand arrested a man he believes was spying on him and some friends and associates at a morning breakfast, according to a report from Jim Mustian and Tyler Bridges of The Advocate New Orleans. Normand told The Advocate he believes U.S. Senator and gubernatorial candidate David Vitter was behind the action. Normand is not a candidate for governor, but is known to be a political foe of Vitter's, according to The Advocate.
Normand told The Advocate that the man identified as 30-year-old Robert J. Frenzel appeared to be trying to record Normand and his group and that after he was confronted by the sheriff. Frenzel stayed at the restaurant until a person at Normand's table took a photo of him. That's when he apparently ran out of the business and through neighboring yards and hid. He was arrested a short time later hiding behind an air conditioning unit.
Frenzel was booked on a count of criminal mischief and released, but Normand told The Advocate that he also has probable cause to charge Frenzel with "interception of a communication."
Normand said he believes Vitter is behind the spying.
"I'm ready to connect the dots," Normand told the Advocate.
