It's brrrrr outside.
.... walk around in a Tshirt for a couple of days ... when it starts snowing and you will acclimate yourself to the cold for the rest of the winter ... also, you have to yell "I am f*#@king freezing" at the top of your lungs ... that helps.

We barely have any leaves down here yet. Many haven't even changed color.

(3,741 posts)The warm weather this year lasted on extra 3 week (el nino) so I got good corn and winter squash. Tomorrow, I'll be out harvesting the parsnips, they always get better after a hard freeze or early snow ... makes them sweeter. I give all my harvest away to my Tribe ... Health Center, Commodities program, Elders program, Child Nutrition/ Head Start, and friends and family. It is a way to give back for all the blessings given to me.

(14,912 posts)the temperatures, but nothing like they have been for the past 13 years that I have been back here though. I also haven't noticed any of the Fall blooms yet, either... although my nose has been running like the Energizer Bunny for the past 2 weeks.
Friday afternoon I walked down to the edge of the woods line in my back yard (I live on 15 acres, mostly wooded) and checked the 2 huge Oak trees that are usually LOADED with acorns so heavy that the branches are sagging, and not ONE acorn in sight. It's less than 50 feet from my back door to the woods, and usually at night, with my bathroom window open before it gets too cold, I can actually heard the deer feeding on the acorns. It's a very distinctive popping noise, if you've never heard it (I don't know if you're a hunter or not). My son was with me, and I looked at him and said "it's going to be a bad deer season this year... no acorns!". I haven't hunted but maybe 3 times in the past 3 years, as I have a tradition of being in the woods every Thanksgiving Morning... come rain, sleet, snow or sunshine.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It's the ONLY ONE that they haven't been able to over-commercialize and ruin. I love sitting out in Nature, reflecting on the year that is about to pass by, and just watching nature happen. I don't care whether I see a deer or not. I like seeing the sun come up and watching the woods come alive... turkeys coming down from their roost, various birds coming through, watching the squirrels & chipmunks play, and occasional fox that comes through. I often see deer, but never shoot, too. *If* and when I do shoot one, it's for meat in the freezer to help cut down on grocery bills. I haven't taken a shot since Thanksgiving Morning 2010. It was a lean year then. This year will be too, especially with no COLA on Disability and Social Security. Grocery bills have gone through the roof, but at least right now gas is below $2/gal and the Power Rates are supposed to be going down.
Sorry for going off on the rambling tangent to a simple question, too, so I will end it here...
Peace to you and yours, Lars39

***Edited to add: *** I just checked...at 8:34 AM, it was 31 degrees on the front porch thermometer!

(26,117 posts)That happened in West Tn about 8 or 9 years ago. It was the summer the high temps really kicked in. My then 80 yo father said he'd never seen that happen before. Our trees here have huge acorns this year, so I've seen some pretty fat and industrious squirrels. Saw a mama deer with her twins in my backyard yesterday.
We've been renovating and packing for the last few months, so I barely know my name, but I sure have missed seeing the colors along I 40.
Thanksgiving always meant a trip to Grandma's with my brothers going hunting very early in the day. Surprised everybody the year they actually got a deer....they always blamed their bad luck on squirrel chatter.
Here's to a better year, Ghost.

(3,598 posts)We here in Western NY are still recovering from last winter. I'm hoping for a mild one this year. But I'm glad you're enjoying it!

(3,741 posts).... that you don't like the snow? If you are living in Western NY ... Upstate ... then you must get so much. If you didn't like it, then you would move, I suspect? Anyway, hope you get the snow you like.

(3,741 posts)... What about Lake effect snow? If you get that where you live, expect more, because the lakes will not freeze over as they have in the past 2 years. Bad for the lake levels ... fish etc.

(1,958 posts)Lake Superior is east of Duluth and the rest of the state. We have some other large lakes, but they are not big enough to affect our snowfall (other than being an expanse so large that the wind blows the snow so far and fast that we have blizzard conditions.)

(40,416 posts)That may get me through the winter, however I doubt it. But the price was low ($2.49 a gallon). It is basically diesel fuel without the road tax. Being on SocSec, it put a huge dent in my budget. But I do not think the price is going to go down.
Last winter we had little snow here, but the temperatures were fucking brutal. I burned through over 400 gallons. So my frugal budget may save me this winter.
I live within the Manistee National Forest in rural Michigan. Things are fucking tough in winter here. Thankfully I live on a school bus route. All dirt roads here, but the bus has to get through to get the kiddies to school. So the county plows daily if need be.
The road is pretty much clear. Now if I can only get somebody to plow my long driveway.
I manage to keep well stocked. Food, booze, books, and Netflicks DVDs.

(3,741 posts)If you can .... look into your insulation. It might be better to spend money to super insulate your house to lower you heating.
2.5 inches of pink foam board placed under your siding ... taped and spray foamed, sealing the openings and cracks, will do the trick. Also, in the attic, spray foam any openings and around the the wall connections and then pump in loose cellouse .... then you will not lose any heat from the house. The house will stay cooler in summer too.

(86,824 posts)in western PA (yesterday) from some folks who were there yesterday. We had some in August and again in September, about a month ago - enough to close some of the passes for a couple days. Most of the foliage was a few weeks ago and we are spozed to get some tomorrow up here in Montana. Hope we get a whole bunch more than we got last winter, everybody in the SW states will be hurting really bad for water if we don't

(10,177 posts)as is northern Michigan proper. I'm used to N.E. Wisconsin, where the winters are about one to two months shorter than yours, depending on the year. But we head up to northern WI and the UP every couple of years to just gawk at the beauty and take pictures. Love it!
