My son is joining a union.

Just found out over the weekend. He is a very talented artist and has been dating a set designer. She has introduced him to "the right people," and will be leaving his ad agency gig in Boston to live in NYC. He'll do graphic design work for film productions...but not until he gets his union card. Granted, it's not a typical "union" one thinks of, of machinists and auto workers, etc, but it still pretty cool!

If he's bargaining collectively for his working conditions and compensation, it's a union. No need to play it down.

There is someone to get upset about virtually anything these days, and I fully expect(ed) someone to chime in with some Hollywood/artist nonsense about it not being a "real" union because he wasn't doing physical labor. Of course, I know better.

And good for him. If you take a look, you will find that the typical Union member of today is a librarian or educator as often as they are machinists or auto workers.
