Equal pay icon Lilly Ledbetter joins opponents of Scott Walker in WI
On Wednesday, with Walkers recall election less than two weeks away, Lilly Ledbetter, an Alabama woman whose name is synonymous with the fight for equal pay for equal work, came to the Capitol to offer her help in defeating Walker.
Equal pay for equal work is a family affair, Ledbetter says. It is no longer a womens issue.
Ledbetter was a 20-year employee of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. when she learned she was earning less than the men doing the same job. She filed suit against her employer. Her case eventually made its way before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2007. In a 5-4 decision, the justices denied her discrimination claim, ruling that she should have filed her suit within 6 months of first being paid unequally.
When President Obama took office, he amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to adjust the statute of limitations period for unequal pay lawsuits, naming it the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.
