74% Of Americans Believe That Religious Beliefs Should Supercede Civil Law?

74% Of Americans Believe That Religious Beliefs Should Supercede Civil Law?

According to a Marist Poll paid for by the Knights Of Columbus (AHEM), 74% of respondents say that religious beliefs should always take precedence over civil law. World Net Daily:

In the Knights of Columbus-Marist Poll, nearly three in four Americans, 74 percent, said freedom of religion should be protected “even if it conflicts with other laws.” Majorities of Americans also would protect the First Amendment conscience rights of health care workers, insurers and hospitals, the poll said. “This survey reveals that the American people are fundamentally dedicated to protecting the First Amendment conscience rights of everyone,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. “Allowing people to opt out of these procedures or services – which violate their faith – is the right thing to do. It is also key to protecting the First Amendment rights of all Americans and enjoys strong public support as well.”

All there is needed for a crypto-fascist takeover of America to actually happen is just for the right movement to emerge. It would come from the shadows, while led by the right charismatic leader, reshaping our society into one where The Bible is rote law and all infidels are to be dealt with.

A takeover of a major political party would be even better. Why reinvent the wheel? It's also a great way to use an established political brand.

Seeing how our economy, media and our military all have the global reach that they do, it could spell some extremely detrimental consequences for us and the rest of the planet, if such a movement takes over this country and the "Leader" takes America on a crusade.

Don't ever say that it can't happen here. That's the very first mistake that skeptics often make, right before they all end up under a pile of burning corpses.

My bet is that the question "Should Quakers be allowed to refuse to pay war taxes on grounds of conscience?" would not get 74% support.

without the actual text of the question and the context of the rest of the survey this doesn't mean shit. i fucking hate polls of this nature due to the HUGE amount of subjectivity in the interpretation of the question by the pollee and the the subjectivity in the interpretation of the results by they pollster.

And it's not just religion. Many believe that their own political views should supersede the law.

I wonder if they will allow that for Rastafarians.

All Catholics have to do is not use birth control or abortion and quit worrying about what non-Catholics do. It's not "freedom of religion" to force your beliefs on others. Somebody inform them it's not 1450.

civil law has to rule. Civil disobedience is a tried-and-true strategy for exposing and changing immoral civil laws.

And civil law should ideally be based on moral principles. The issue is how do you separate nonsectarian moral principles from religious beliefs when it comes to creating civil laws?

This is America. And it is batshit crazy for religion.

I believe the results, and they are frightening.

NO myths should ever infringe on civil rights. They are not equal. Period.

A Catholic organization. First Amendment rights of health care workers? Nobody's infringing their First Amendment rights. But they have to do their damn jobs!!!!!

I smell a slanted poll; might as well call it a push poll.

ON EDIT: "Knights". Really??? Knights? Do the Catholics still believe they're all Crusaders or Knights Templar or something? WTF???? Welcome to the 12th Century.
