Veil debate becomes big issue in Canada election, putting Conservatives into leadOne womans insistence on her right to conceal her face has become a central issue, dividing voters and giving the Conservatives a late boost
But for 35 million Canadians, this womans stubborn insistence on her right to conceal her face has become a central issue in the ongoing election campaign, giving a late boost to a Conservative government that had previously seemed doomed to defeat. After announcing this month that it would go to the supreme court of Canada to appeal its second defeat, the Conservatives moved from third to first place in polls tracking opinion prior to the October election.
The Conservatives know, majority public opinion sharply disagrees. Its a huge issue, said pollster Frank Graves of EKOS Research Associates. Its sorting the electorate right now. It has really invigorated the Conservatives and moved them into a clear lead.
Equally significant, according to Graves, was the advantage the incumbents gained by their refusal to increase Canadas intake of Syrian refugees in response to the current crisis even after the death on a Greek beach of three-year old Alan Kurdi, whose family was hoping to find safe haven in Canada.
The ruling partys nativist turn has left opposition leaders and progressive citizens gasping with indignation. Canadians should see right through this as a way to distract from the real issues that affect peoples day to day life, said Amira Elghawaby of the National Council of Canadian Muslims. Were talking about the economy, were talking about the climate, the future for everyone. Whether a woman wants to cover her face for the two minutes it takes to swear her oath is not an issue that should be front and centre in an election.

A conservative party using "a distraction from the real issues that affect people's day to day life" to "move into a clear lead" in an election in which the Conservative party had "seemed doomed to defeat".
Of course, Trump and other republicans have already said that they would accept no Syrian refugees so they don't need the advice from Canadian conservatives on this. But the GOP will quickly realize that fear of Muslims combined with the unpopularity of allowing the hijab may rescue them from an election in 2016 in which they were "doomed to defeat".

(14,971 posts)1. Conservatives the world over use fear as a campaign strategy.
Cameron used fear of Scotland taking over the UK to win his campaign. Fear and hate.
