1. I still don't get why we would compare ourselves to Western Europe

We're a colonial country, not a European country, and we have violence rates pretty much like the rest of the colonial countries.

(And, well, it's kind of between the two groups, just like our violence rate is.)

Countries with relatively stable constitutional systems, large diverse colonial populations and a legacy of slavery, and significant income inequality. Just like us.
