Kim Davis, Clerk Who Refused To Issue Marriage Licenses To Gay Couples, Claims She Met The Pope

The Vatican spokesman didn't deny the encounter took place but refused to comment on the topic.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky clerk who went to jail for defying a federal court's orders to issue same-sex marriage licenses says she met briefly with the pope during his historic visit to the United States.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, didn't deny the encounter took place but said Wednesday in Rome he had no comment on the topic.

Rowan County clerk Kim Davis and her husband met privately with Pope Francis last Thursday afternoon at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C., for less than 15 minutes, said her lawyer, Mat Staver.

Davis offered details on their brief encounter to ABC News.

“I was crying. I had tears coming out of my eyes," she said. "I'm just a nobody, so it was really humbling to think he would want to meet or know me.”

Whether the story is accurate or not, the fact remains the Catholic hierachy is really not changing. Because Pope Francis comes out and says we should help the poor and disadvantaged in our society, and insure that everyone has essentially needs, food, shelter, and healthcare, does not make him a liberal. That he comments on the abusers in the Church and say it will not be tolerated, is not a liberal point. These are obvious things that institutions should agree with without question.

When he said that people who have had abortions can be "forgiven for their sins". That isn't a liberal concept. The church still regards abortion for any reason as a sin. Gee, I guess if a women has an abortion because of rape, incest, or the life of mother, that is mighty Christian of the pope that they can be forgiven for "committing the sin in the first place"

The pope expressing sympathy for Davis, and saying she has every right not to do her job, is ignoring that fact that she is a public official who is supposed to abide by the laws of the land, and if she doesn't agree to those terms she can resign.

Stating certain scientific realities does not make this pope enlightened. The fact that he rejects abortion, invert fertilization, birth control, and embryonic stem cell research, and same sex marriage is the position of the church, and anyone who engages as such is a sinner.

The biggest change to the church is that this pope recognizes the poor and people's suffering in public, and speaks out against some injustices, which is something they should have been doing all along.

You or I don't just instigate a meeting with the Pope. That's not how things work.

The Vatican spokesman emphasized that the meeting with Ms. Davis was arranged by the office of the Vatican’s ambassador in Washington, not by anyone in Rome — including the pope.

On Wednesday, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed the meeting, but he declined to elaborate. “I do not deny that the meeting took place, but I have no other comments to add,” he said.

Mr. Staver said that Vatican officials had been aware of Ms. Davis, and that the meeting had been arranged through them — not through bishops or the bishops’ conference in the United States. He would not identify the Vatican officials.
