Everyone in the world can tell you that you have a drug problem and it won't make a bit of difference until you have a personal moment of reality relative to it.
My experience is that you can't talk people who buy right wing bullshit out of thinking it makes sense, because they WANT to believe it.
Not sure what can be done about it ...

(5,178 posts)Gotta keep those shareholders happy. They don't mind socialism for themselves, just when those unaffiliated with Wall St get a taste.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of well funded corporate lobbyists, investors will be the last to worry about dealing with the harsh realities they are crafting each day.

(2,382 posts)... that corporatists have infiltrated, and now control, every aspect of our government? Living in a corporatist hellscape is not some future abstraction, we're living in it right NOW! "Job Creators," my lily-white rump.
The magnitude of their evil can only be calculated in astronomical terms, and they deserve no mercy whatsoever. Jail them for crimes against humanity, throw away the key, and then rewrite the laws of corporate governance so that EVERY corporation MUST be a B-corporation, or they cannot do business in this country.
Burial in a toxic waste dump would be too good for this pack of psychopaths.

(2,642 posts)But this line of argument and these memes do not fly very well with the general public. Sure, they play great here on the DU, which had been taken over by the types of people who think this way, but the mainstream does not.
If you tell a corporation that instead of $10 billion in taxes, they only need to pay $5 billion - that isn't a subsidy. That's a tax reduction. The word subsidy has a very specific meaning. I suggest you learn what it is before you throw it around.
Now if you do give a business a subsidy (GE, ATT, Verizon, AEP, et al.) because you want them to perform a task that they otherwise would not (build wind turbines, build out high speed wireless infrastructure, install wind turbines and solar) then it's awful dumb and wasteful to then attack and lambaste them for doing exactly what you asked them to do.
Some people will never learn. I suspect that anyone who thinks that we hand corporations billions of dollars out of the public trust for no reason are amongst that group.

The meme treats the poor as undeserving, rather than deserving. And as such, free stuff generally means stuff going to groups of people that I dont care about, or groups of people I want to shame for their financial situation.

(5,714 posts)Oftentimes, combined with casual sexism ( "those single mothers having too many kids are taking advantage of the TAXPAYERS!!" ).
Remember, in America, race is the lens through which public discourse - and public policy - deals with poverty. Or did you think all of those white Republican voters (many of whom are only one paycheck or emergency away from poverty) don't take full advantage of welfare state programs themselves?

(581 posts)given to big corporations on an annual basis. They are silent on this fact. When will these brave leaders change the tax codes to eliminate all the subsidizes to corporations? When? When will the Republicans understand that the poor doesn't get 1% of what big corporations get. When Republicans will you change the tax code?

(658 posts)This is from a conversation I recently had with an accountant who has been very busy trying to balance a corporate budget.
What was said was that they needed to cut expenses to the tune of a certain amount. One thing that was identified was an expense of around $3,000.00. The 3k represented an annual gift of a $7 meal chit given to each employee on their birthday.
My question to them was this. Why would you consider taking $7 a year from each employee, but not $3,000 away from an executive making a million dollars a year?
I thought it was a valid question.

(5,751 posts)First, nobody gets FREE stuff. It's all paid for with a conservative mathematical algorithm. It's sad really, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me. You that ingests it, pay more than you know.
Groups, corporations, large organizations, those that can bring internet development dollars to bear, can make a big difference in this day and age.
But real "real" people, progressives, humanists, environmentalists, scientists, and even more powerful, just regular Americans, make these times much more interesting.
I am so psyched to see how this plays out!
