Tough decisions - Horses to be slaughtered -round up in national parks

[IMG][/IMG]

Federal officials announced recently that the Tonto National Forest horses that will be sold at auction are to be "condemned, destroyed, or otherwise disposed of.” Tonto National Forest horses are classified as strays so they are not covered by the protections of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
To minimize growing criticism of the scheduled auction, national forest officials have delayed the sale for four months. Many of the expected purchasers are "kill buyers" who will immediately load their purchases onto long-haul trailers for shipment to Mexico or Canada to be processed into horse meat for foreign consumption. The cost of horse meat in Europe is about $20.00 per pound.

Site goes on to explain the reason why and provides some interesting things being done in other areas to control horse and deer populations. Also paints the cruel nature of the round-ups and slaughtering of the horses.

1. Will we try to kill them off like the Indian and the buffalo?

We look at our 19th century counterparts with a rather superior tone of disapproval for their actions against native peoples, endangered animals, etc. , then we do shit like this! I can't believe they had a means to control the population and they chose this barbaric solution.

Much as "misspoke" is code for "Spoke perfectly well, but said something for which I don't want to take responsibility."

It's hard for me to step in with a comment here; as a life-long horse owner, I have more than a bit of bias.

But I don't like this.

6. Or revealed the truth without intending so to do.

And sometimes the truth revealed unintentionally is that the person who "misspoke" is an asshat.

Former Senator Allen just leapt to mind. (But this discussion is probably better left to another thread. These poor animals never misspeak.)

8. That's horrible. Profit is a clear motive here. They could control the horse

population with birth control, but they would rather sell them and make money. They should be ashamed of themselves.

What is the "native species"? Seems like it evolution in a sense in that its vying for food, resources, etc. and pushing out the species that can't survive. Nature is rather brutal and, of course, man does his part in fucking thing up.

They could very easily control the population with birth control.
