It's been in the news. Now it has been confirmed. As of this past weekend, Raymond Leo Burke, America's highest-ranking cardinal at the Vatican, was officially removed from the Vatican's Supreme Court, and demoted to chaplain of the Knights of Malta, where he will reign with much less responsibility. The ultra-Conservative and anti-gay cardinal, continuously challenges the jurisdiction of Pope Francis, and the Catholic Church's new receptive stance on homosexuality.

(40,656 posts)courageous. May he be safe. There is a conservative backlash building in the church hierarchies over him but they will lose. They don't have the love of the people. Go, Frances. Safely.

And he received that OK from Ratzinger who did NOT clear it with Pope John Paul who actually disliked GWBush and saw him as evil.

(15,324 posts)Nothing wrong with a sinful prelate being the apostate-in-chief. Boner was also a "good" Catholic (gotta remember to use the cap-C since lower-case "c" are ok/OK.)
Since fake religiosity seems to be the Order Of The Day in most religions and congress, we have a made-in-heaven congruence.

Pope Francis on Wednesday made an unscheduled stop to a convent of nuns to show his support for their lawsuit against U.S. President Barack Obama's healthcare law.
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the visit to the convent of the Little Sisters of the Poor for what he called a "brief but symbolic visit."
Last August, a federal appeals court in Denver put on hold its ruling that the order of Roman Catholic nuns must comply with a contraception mandate in the law, giving the group time to petition the U.S. Supreme Court.
.. The Sisters argued that the law forces them to provide insurance coverage for their employees to support contraception and sterilization services in violation of their religious beliefs, or face steep fines.
(the Sisters don't have to pay for the insurance, all they have to do is notify the federal government that they are opting out of the requirement, and then a 3rd party or their insurer pays for it. But the Sisters argue that even providing an opt-out notification makes them complicit in providing sterilization and contraceptive coverage)

(9,688 posts)He is the nasty guy who tried to deny communion to John Kerry and all other Catholic pro-choice congressional Democrats in 2004. . and overtly campaigned for Bush and the Republican agenda in 2004, a transgression which marked him on my enemies list forever for that alone. It's not just anti-gay (bad enough)-- it's EVERYTHING. He is the worst of the worst-- the kind of person who gives religion a bad name.
I couldn't be more delighted by his declining fortunes..
FYI, this is good news, but also old news -- it happened almost a year ago. But I always like to read as many stories as possible about any problems befalling this total a __ hole.
Thanks for reminding me.

On December 10, 1994, Pope John Paul II named Burke as Bishop of La Crosse, consecrating him to the episcopate on January 6, 1995, in St. Peter's Basilica.[11] Burke took possession of the See of La Crosse on February 22, 1995.[11]
In 2000 Burke convened the fifth diocesan synod for the Diocese of La Crosse, which resulted in the publication of Synod V, acts : celebrated June 1114, 2000 in 2003.[12] He was also named a Knight Commander with Star of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in 1997 and received the Canon Law Society of America's Role of Law award in 2000.[4] In 2002, he was influential in founding the Canons Regular of the New Jerusalem, an order of Augustinian canons dedicated to the traditional form of the liturgy.[13]
During his tenure as Bishop of La Crosse, Burke constructed a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas.[14][15][16][17] He also installed a shrine to the Sacred Heart in the diocesan cathedral, reflecting his desire to encourage spiritual devotions.[18]
Some priests in the Diocese of La Crosse have claimed that Burke's leadership there was divisive. The construction of the shrine, the diocese's withdrawal from Church World Service's annual Crop Walk, and his welcoming of traditional religious orders allegedly alienated some.[19]
The shrine does bring in tons of people from around the world to La Crosse, and it is on one of the most beautiful bluffs in our area.....but people are still really ticked off about the way it got built.

(45,319 posts)No, of course you can't. Because that's not what happened, that's not what was said and you know it. This is an old story being brought up to serve an agenda but the problem with it is that like most of these 'Francis is pro gay' pieces it is fully concocted conjecture, free of citation, free of quotation, devoid of substance and existing only as a fabricated claim designed to serve a rhetorical objective. In short, it is the bearing of false witness, a bogus introduction of fantasy presented as fact.
Prove your assertion. You won't because you can't.
