3. True. If Frances is really trying to change the direction of such an institution,

he has his work cut out for him. My guess is there are plenty of more conservative traditionalists at the Vatican who wish Benedict had never retired.

4. Francis is just what they want, a publicity friendly distraction to their own corruption.

They are a bigoted, anti choice organization rife with child abuse and because they cast the right figure head liberals stand with him and against equal rights and reproductive freedom. He's the smartest thing the religious right has done in years.

Yes, they are as you stated:

"

Unfortunately, the other "they" are lonely people who need and love the church for solace, comfort in deaths, peace, companionship, structure, discipline, years of being taught and brainwashed."

Not all are like the they you describe, only those who run the church and maybe a lot of the fanatics who attend it.

Try to empathize or feel sorry with that poor "other" "they" whose lives would be empty and guilt-ridden without it. They have it not too much better than gays and don't even know it.

8. I doubt he is going to convince liberals to join him against equal rights and reproductive freedom.

No one who believes in equal rights and reproductive freedom trusts him enough for that. Liberals have essentially never trusted the Vatican. He and his church are a known quantity in that regard.

He will also have a hard time convincing conservatives to join him in his views on poverty, capitalism and the environment. And conservatives have traditionally looked favorably on the Vatican because it was in sync with RW politics pretty much across the board. They are in uncharted territory now.

I could not believe the opulence. It really bothered me. Couldn't get out
of there fast enough: the place really creeped me out.
