Washington (CNN)Donald Trump hit presidential campaign turbulence Friday for his handling of a town hall participant's comment about President Barack Obama's religion -- but this was only the most recent time the real estate mogul stirred controversy over the President's background.

Trump has long been one of the most vocal skeptics about Obama's birthplace and faith.

Four years ago, Trump mounted a campaign to pressure Obama to release his long-form birth certificate, even saying he would send investigators to Hawaii to find out the truth. The effort helped fuel the so-called "birther" conspiracy theory that held that Obama was born in Kenya -- and Trump also floated the idea that Obama's birth documents may label him a Muslim.

"He doesn't have a birth certificate. He may have one, but there's something on that, maybe religion, maybe it says he is a Muslim," Trump told Fox News in 2011. "I don't know. Maybe he doesn't want that."

Trump doesn't believe ANY of that stuff - he was "just asking questions", you see? Trump is just saying "maybe" - he's not saying he actually expected anyone to *believe* that stuff. He's what you call a "skeptic", that's all.

I was amused by the sudden simultaneous emergence of "guy was a plant" threads here on DU.

I never watch Fox, but when I feel they are going to have to face a wave of cognitive dissonance, I will dvr some of it and hit the highlights. This is maybe, three times a year.

But I wanted to know what they were making of "Muslim birther guy" and, sure enough, the guy was a "plant". Too funny.

Trump has been playing with this horseshit for years, but you need to "plant" someone who says precisely the same stuff.
