Facebook Is Finally Making a ‘Dislike’ Button

Brace yourselves: the Facebook “Dislike” button is coming.

Despite previously saying the social network wasn’t planning to build a “dislike” button, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during a Tuesday Q&A session that his company has indeed been working on one.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years,” Zuckerberg said. “Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it.”

But for those of us who do like it and use it, the "dislike" button will enhance our experience.

It is very weird to "like" a post which we intensely dislike, which is how it is now. Things will improve with the new choice.

7. Why would you like a post you "intensely dislike" - it's a show of support.

I think if anything it allows negativity to spread. If I don't like something, I ignore it or remove it using existing functionality. Not so different from DU where we don't have up or down votes for individual posts, just up for OPs.

I do agree though that it gets weird when you're dealing with some major life events.

For example, if someone posts a story about the Syrian refugee crisis, people may "like" the post to get it into the newsfeed, but they don't actually "like" the situation the post is about.

The other side is that increasing conflict and is not helpful making is an important reason to not do it.

I see stories I dislike and don't ignore all the time. If it is a dumb anti-Obama or religious thing, I ignore it.
But, when poster is sharing an story that is useful and I dislike something about it, I comment.

10. One Good Feature On Facebook I Found

I started a page just to contact my sister when my other doggie died. It was the only web way i knew to let her know.

For a long time i got bombarded in my personal email account with Facebook this, and Facebook that. But, i never actually used Facebook.

They must have a feature that deactivates the email alert function if an account is inactive for too long, because i stopped getting those alerts.

That's pretty convenient for me, because i don't get the value of Facebook. Actually, i'm a bit baffled about the whole of social media. So much of it seems like a big "so what".

A mob of people recommending a post here is most often a nice thing, it usually brings a positive vibe to this place.

Angry mobs organized by a few people with personal vendettas using the "Un-rec" feature was is a very ugly thing.

I don't know how facebook works, but I'm certain a dislike button will bring a lot more negativity to the place.

As it is now, when somebody posts news like that, our only choices are to comment, hit 'like', or both. Clicking 'like' to show support seems weird because it looks like we 'like' what happened, when we don't.

The 'Dislike' button isn't going to be for disliking someone's political posts or sports posts.

"This makes me happy" or "This makes me sad" is not the same as "Like" or "Dislike."

So if someone suffers a death in the family or is sick or has undergone some other type of misfortune, you don't have to awkwardly "like" that bad news but still express your good vibes to that person without having to expressly spell it out.

Whatever.

(Of course, if someone is posting about how they love Donald Trump, can I slyly express my sympathy for their apparently impaired state of mind? )
