Divided opinions on state flag issue (MS)

... In DeSoto County, State Sen. David Parker, R-Olive Branch, said the time has come to change the controversial banner.

Parker said in an earlier interview that the current state flag divides people rather than unites them.

"I spend my day seeing patients from all walks of life," Parker said. "I spend my day with people who don't look like me or walk or talk like me. An event like what happened in South Carolina ties us to something which has become a symbol of hatred sometimes."

Parker said as a human being and a practicing Christian, not necessarily as a politician, he doesn't want to support something that is hurtful to anyone ...
