Hathaway and Jones said that Clarks removal of the portrait was not the main reason they traveled to Stuart to organize the rally. Their main point of contention was Clarks assertion that slavery was the cause of the Civil War.
Jones said that his great-grandfather did not fight alongside Gen. Robert E. Lee because he believed in slavery; he was a poor sharecropper fighting to protect his family and his land. He came to Patrick County all the way from North Augusta, S.C. on Saturday because Clarks insensitive statement had dragged his ancestors through the mud ...
Jones said that the rally was to show support for the people of Stuart, but I didnt see too many people of Stuart there ...
