That's my complaint about it. No room with 4 bunks in it should generate ten grand a month.

(111,302 posts)When prices get that outrageous, people work for a year or two and then stick it onto the resume and leave. Doors open when you've survived a city on either coast.

(41,833 posts)Yes it is expensive, I get paid once a month and after rent and utilities, I have a little left.. but not so much that I can do wonderful things...still I love this city, its food and its Asian culture..its Hispanic culture..and all the other cultures that are embedded here..
I guess its better than those Tokyo Tube Rentals!

(63,221 posts)Lafayette Park and it was huge! Even when I had to scale down for grad school, I found a cute studio on Fillmore and Webster for $650. It's amazing how much it has gone up! I doubt very much that salaries have kept pace. We used to pay 1/4 to maybe at most 1/3 of our salaries in rent and now it's more like 1/2.
I'm now living in Boston and paying a lot in rent, but at least I have my own studio in a nice area. There is no way I could afford a 1 BR here though. I'm also paying off a hefty student loan.

(41,833 posts)I pay both rent and utilities to my land lady that's about 1250 a month, and thanks to rent control it could be a lot higher. I was living in Santa Barbara, and had a place not far from the Ocean, and it was 750 a month. It jumped up to 1450 a month, I had to get out, there was no way at the time I could pay that.

(5,477 posts)thanks to the the anti-development nutbags that live up there. It's really sad and pathetic what San Francisco has become.

(78,249 posts)Have you been to The City lately? New construction is popping up everywhere, especially South of Market. The problem is it's almost all market value, which the aforementioned techie d-bags have inflated to a ridiculous level, largely because no one, present company included, wants to live down here in San Jose.

(37,748 posts)Things like this make me think there really is a bright side to living in small, $450/mnth, one-bedroom, ghetto apartment in the middle of the city's warehouse district ten miles from anything (except my office-- which is only a mile away).
No doubt there are regional differences in COL, but $1800 amonth? Really? That's just way too rich for my skinny wallet.

(41,833 posts)my rent with Utilities a month comes out around 1250 a month, in my one bed room granny apartment! Its in the garage area, so I hate it when the fog is thick and cold, seeps in under my front door. I have to put towels down for insulation.

(7,412 posts)And limited housing supply. If you have a couple or roommates making a combined $150,000 a year then $3,000-$4,000 or so a month for rent or mortgage isn't unreasonable.
