(CNN) Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who's refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, on Monday asked the Kentucky governor to immediately free her from jail ... Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear's office said Monday he won't respond, noting that the conflict was a "matter between her and the courts" ... U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered her to jail Thursday, ruling she was in contempt of court for refusing to issue the licenses and not allowing her deputies to distribute them ... "Government officials are free to disagree with the law, but not disobey it," U.S. Attorney Kerry B. Harvey said in a statement. "The county clerk has presented her position through the federal court system, all of the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. It is time for the clerk and the county to follow the law" ...

(171 posts)There's not enough makeup and cosmetic talent in all of NYC to put her on FOX news. She's got a face for radio though.

(21,717 posts)That doesn't mean she knows law. Remember, she listens to a "higher" authority.

Unfortunately, the tides of history were against granting tax-breaks for bigotry; and the tax-breaks eventually disappeared, which politicized him

(21,578 posts)Gofundme has shut down that route. she's going to have to actually work to get rich, but even then I suspect religious zealots will just tell her what to say as they pull the string behind the scenes. not sure if getting rich will be as easy as she thinks it is. the zealots will want to be rich too and will probably manipulate her for that goal.

(5,857 posts)she wasn't asking for him to violate the court order.
She was asking him to issue an executive order which would take her name off the marriage licenses, after which she would comply with the federal court order.
It wasn't quite as stupid as an appeal to the governor initially seemed.

(2,256 posts)But how long can they keep her in jail? There has to be a set time limit or something.

(3,577 posts)Or until her term of office is finished or the legislature passes a law changing the license procedure, or some other thing happens that ends the duty she must perform as a clerk. With contempt of court, the judge does not impose any set amount of jail time as would be the case with a criminal conviction. As the saying goes, "she holds the key to the jail cell in her hands" and can get out anytime she decides to stop acting with contempt for the court's authority.

She's lucky she doesn't get charged with obstruction on top of contempt
