General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am watching Barack Obama on MSNBC. Gawd, I wish there was no 22nd Amendment.
The 22nd Amendment is a limit on the franchise of the voters. Elected officials should have their fate decided at the ballot box and not by diktat.

(99,710 posts)I wouldn't go that far but elected officials should have their fate decided at the ballot box and not by diktat. Term limits are arbitrary limits on the franchise of the voters.

(14,449 posts)He would have won a third. A Clinton would have won 3 too.

(99,710 posts)I suspect Reagan wouldn't have run for re-election at 77 years old though.
A third Clinton term would have been fine with me. Clinton v W would have been a fun campaign.

(14,449 posts)The problem is that except for president Obama, most second terms are horrible.

(99,710 posts)Back to Reagan I don't think he would have lost because he was too old. He wouldn't have run at all, imho.

(51,076 posts)barely knew his name by the time his second term ended. Curled up in a ball in bed is not a good campaign strategy, if you ask me that is

(99,710 posts)If the people were willing to re-elect him as a small d democrat I would have to live with the results. Ironically your remarks prove my point...If he ran for a third term , by all accounts, he would had his ass handed to him, ultimately proving the wisdom of the American people.

(82,383 posts)Even without the 22nd, they are not President for life. FDR had to run four times.

(31,235 posts)I don't trust the American people with these decisions. They "elected" W, and there seems to be a building consensus that we could actually wind up with a President Trump. Now if that doesn't scare the bejeebus out of any rational thinking adult, I don't know what will.
Rock on Barack Obama. Best president of my lifetime.

(99,710 posts)My dear friend, I trust the people to get it right and if we can't we might as well cancel this experiment in self rule now as flawed as it is.

(24,853 posts)I thought all Constitutional amendments were.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)What Constitutional Amendment to the United States Constitution did you or any voters vote on?
I don't believe that's how the federal constitutional amendment process works.
Also, limiting or extending the franchise isn't submitted to a plebiscite.

(24,853 posts)I'm not sure what I was thinking, but it was wrong.

(99,710 posts)No problem. BTW, the 22nd Amendment came out of a Republican congress who were in a pique about FDR's third term.

(5,811 posts)possible. Instead, we have the OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL CENTER in Chicago with satellite centers in New York and Hawaii. The centers will support and promote #BlackScholarship @BlackExcellence #BlackLegacy #BlackWealth

(2,472 posts)Either Sanders or Clinton will be a much better president than Obama. The man isn't close to being a liberal and he's failed repeatedly in defending the democratic party. With Obama we're one grand bargain away from destroying Social Security and other hard fought liberal gains.

(42,770 posts)how it would be great if he stayed president? (perhaps?) and instead it became a discussion about the amendment.
I admire him so much - after having half the world against him from day 1 - having people accuse him of not being born here - having republicans vote against everything he proposed - everything - without even looking at it first...the man rose above it every last time.

(99,710 posts)He or she or any elected official should have the right to stay in office...with the consent of the people...as expressed by their franchise.
But PBO has been an especially good pres.
