Police charge woman for false report in cop killer manhunt

A false report from a woman who claimed to have an encounter with two suspicious men near the scene of a fatal cop shooting north of Chicago unnecessarily triggered a massive police search, law enforcement officials said Thursday.

Kristin Kiefer, 30, initially told police that two men had tried to enter her car after she stopped at the side of the road because of vehicle trouble, according to a Lake County, Ill. Sheriff's Office statement. The woman later admitted to investigators she made the false claim because she wanted attention from the family who employs her as a nanny. The woman acknowledged she was aware that the area was near where Gliniewicz was gunned down, the sheriff's department said.

About 85 federal, state and local law enforcement officials were on the scene in Volo, Ill., following the woman's report that she saw the men about 9:20 p.m.on Wednesday. Volo is about five miles from Fox Lake, Ill., where Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was shot and killed Tuesday.

Police also deployed 11 police dogs and three air support units to help assist in a five-hour search of the area. Kiefer was charged early Thursday with disorderly conduct and falsifying a police report.
