If you fine her, the taxpayers will more than likely be footing that bill.
Is there ANY way this woman loses in this scenario?

Her lawyers should be disbarred, btw.

I don't think she'll get "retire next month" rich, but remember the bakers who put up the gofundme?

(82,849 posts)It's not Kim Davis acting in the law-mandated performance of her office's duties that are in contempt of court, it's Davis acting on her own. Her office is, as it has always been, subject to the law of the land, but it's Davis herself who is acting contrary to that law. When a government official is carrying out his or her mandated duties and that infringes on someone's civil rights, then the taxpayers foot the bill. But when the government official is acting contrary to her mandate, the onus falls on the elected official.

(24,461 posts)See the rub here? This isn't a private sector employee, this is an elected official.
I can't help but think that her advisers in the Liberty Council are goading her along in this sorry instance of ignorance, because they know they have nothing to lose.
We're a nation of laws, and goddamn it, if you and I are expected to abide by these laws, then she should be also.

(82,849 posts)I think you're stove-piping here. Yes, Kim Davis' salary is paid by the taxpayers, and the money she earns for her job comes ultimately from the taxpayers. However, what she does with her earnings is up to her. I don't think anyone would seriously argue that if Kim Davis buys a bottle of whiskey for herself that the taxpayers are buying her drinks.
Any fine levied against Davis would be paid not from the County coffers, but from Davis' personal funds. Those funds, obviously, would have originated with the taxpayers, but the original expenditure of County funds would have been for Davis' salary. The money that would be paid for the fine would go missing from her personal funds, not County funds.

(82,849 posts)So that seems reasonable to me. Suspension. Unpaid furlough. Something. I don't think tossing her in the clink is going to effect any kind of change; Mrs. Davis has a martyr complex a mile wide, from what I can see.

(10,362 posts)She will end up rich regardless of how this plays out. Though she will become famous if she's jailed.

(37,748 posts)I'm not too keen on predicating a sentence on prevailing sentiment; it's either justice, or merely a popularity contest.
Additionally, I see nothing to indicate taxpayers will be paying her fine. A Contempt of Court charge plus fines, nor even a short jail term will not create a martyr. She's a buffoon, everyone sees it as such, and her eleven minutes of fame will not go beyond a few thousand raised on one internet site or another to cover her fees.

(31,392 posts)I would wager that if she doesn't resign during her court appearance, the Judge
will send her to cool her heels in the slammer so that someone can take over
issuing marriage licenses in that county.
The media will move on. No one is going to care about a woman--on her 4th husband--who
got pregnant with twins from a 3rd husband while married to a 1st husband. She has
zero class and not much appeal to other fundamentalists. The media will move on.

(24,461 posts)A: The Kentucky House of Representatives would have to charge her with an impeachable offense and the Senate would then try her.
Q: Is that likely?
A: The Kentucky Equality Federation, a gay rights group, has called for Gov. Steve Beshear to call a special session of the General Assembly to pursue impeachment. But Beshear, citing costs, has already declined to convene a special session to consider emergency legislation that would accommodate Davis and other clerks by having state government issue marriage licenses. Also, Bluegrass Polls show most Kentucky voters oppose gay marriage and support accommodating Davis. Beshear declined to comment Tuesday.
Out of 2.4 Billion Christians, I can easily pick out 10-100,000 members who would likely stand up for her financially.

(31,392 posts)$135,00. for ONE couple. Davis faces potential lawsuits from LOTS of people who were denied
marriage licenses while she was parading around as God's special emissary to Rowan County.
Fundies may like giving $$ to people of their own principles, but this woman is not a sympathetic
character, given her marital history and track record as an adulterer. She will not get the donations.

(1,333 posts)who think she would be more of a hero if she quit instead of staying on the job and refusing to sign those marriage licenses for gays. Right now, she is just a hypocrite and a coward who wants to eat her cake and have it. Follow the examples set by conscientious objectors and leave your position.
I would have a bit more respect for her if she wasn't standing in the way of progress.

(5,354 posts)How about this:
Ask to speak to her supervisor about this. If the supervisor is someone OTHER than God, she is lying.
Ask to see her paycheck. If it is signed by someone OTHER than God, she is lying.
Ask her where the money that is used to pay her salary comes from. If it's not God's own bank account, she's lying.
