(53,339 posts)I've visited Albuquerque many times because my ex was from South Valley there. But I only stumbled into the Balloon Fest once, while passing through on a 2-month cross-country drive. Unfortunately, that year it was raining and they had an accident when a balloon struck power lines and all the balloons were grounded.
But nothing beats the fry bread at the state fair there!

(15,805 posts)Many years ago I lived just south of the fairgrounds where the balloons used to launch from. Quite a few went right over the house, and we were always surprised at the noise. Beautiful, though. There's still something simply majestic about the way they catch the air currents.

(14,255 posts)Many years ago, I was very early for a balloon festival near Brandon, Fl (don't think they do that any more), got there very early. No crowds, no noise, just one balloon ascending. The sound was like how I imagine dragon's breath would sound. If there were dragons.

(17,663 posts)I still see an individual balloon or two when I look over my back wall sometimes...they drift along so beautifully.
I've never been up to ABQ for the festival...but I hear "the glow" is great....

It happened Sept 20, 2012, on the way to its final destination in CA. It flew over White Sands and NASA, where so much work on the shuttle program was done...
I was standing on the dam as it passed right over me...It brings tears to my eyes...
