So my wife made arrangements for us to spend a long weekend on Mackinac Island

Found that our first and second choice for lodging were filled. (?) We like going there this time of year because they are winding down for the year and the crowds are usually light. We did find a place to stay but I was curious as to why everything was filled so late in the season.

A little bit of quick investigation was all it took to find out that we will have company on the island while we are there. Turns out our trip coincides with the 31st Biennial Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference.

No cars are allowed on the island, not even clown cars, so it looks like we can expect more horse shit in the streets than normal with such luminaries in attendance as Scott Walker, John E. Bush, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, along with our very own Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder. One would also expect a few billionaires will be making unannounced visits as well.

I thought about trying to get press credentials but the wife, who is relatively apolitical, was vehemently against it.
Any fun suggestions on how to take these lemons and make lemonade?

I do plan to pay my respects to our own attempt at Easter Island North; a visit to the big bronze head of Homer Simpson:

a friend of mine is going to be quite unhappy. She is going to be there. Oh well, she is quite outspoken - maybe she will make someone listen.

I just received notice that it shipped so I should have it before the end of the week.

I also have some other favorites I plan to wear that weekend.

It is cheaper to stay in Mackinac city and just pay for the ferry ride over.

if you add in the cost of the ferry back and forth a couple of times and we find it's not any more expensive to stay on the island. It's also nice not being bound to the ferry schedule.

Apart from choosing to marry me, Mackinac Island was the best idea my late, great ex ever had. Absolutely perfect getaway.

The sculptor must have hated him. That giant bust makes him look absolutely evil.
