Former N.J. Governor Dick Codey assesses how Cory Bookers Bain defense might affect his statewide ambition
By Steve Kornacki
Richard J. Codey, a fixture in New Jersey politics who spent years as the state Senate president and a 14-month stint as governor, knows Cory Booker very well. He isnt exactly surprised at the mess the Newark mayor has made for Barack Obama by challenging his campaigns emphasis on Mitt Romneys private equity background.
Hes someone whos been courting big money ever since he first ran for office, Codey told Salon today. It is what it is not that theres anything wrong with doing that if you want to. But what Mr. Romney and his fellow millionaires did at Bain Capital is fair game, no question about it.
Money from Wall Street and the investor class has played a big role in Bookers rise, helping him level the playing field in his 2002 mayoral bid against incumbent Sharpe James and to ward off serious competition in his follow-up campaigns in 2006 and 2010. His cultivation of and sympathy for Wall Street, though, may come as news to many of Bookers rank-and-file Democratic admirers.
People inside politics have always understood it, Codey said. Hes just played that game very, very well. And if you run for statewide office like it looks like he wants to, thats going to be helpful for you.

(16,350 posts)Damn. Another one? I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of running for national office and what compromises to your values you have to make to succeed. But I am so damned tired of turncoat, Repub-lite Democrats. What the hell?

(10,942 posts)Is that people of your apparent ilk put people that display the image that Booker and a John Edwards did on a pedestal. You bash the honest, see what you get sausage makers like President Obama and Harry Reid. Booker's closeness to the New Jersey governor made me uneasy from the jump. I am ok with NJ democrats throwing Booker under the bus, he fucking earned that end.

(188 posts)country, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maine, Michigan et al. They didn't platform on what they're doing or have done. They lied to get in then turned on the voters that put them there and attacked them with cuts to wages & health care, busted their unions, gave cronies positions of power and money, tore apart their education system and gave massive tax cuts to corporations.
Mr Booker was speaking out both sides of his mouth and until he hypocritically attacked Obama for attacking Bain, I had never heard him say anything that would have suggested he was anything other than a Dem. He's not a Dem though, I would say they paid him large to be a Blue Dog plant and they paid him even more to sabotage the Dem Party!
Obama isn't a sausage maker he's a rain-maker and he's making rain despite attempts to stop him.
While I disagree with him strongly quite often his policies are sound and they work! Since Obama has gotten more accomplished than Reagan Bush Clinton & Bush combined, I would say he's a One Man Show.
The man has dragged the country to recovery on his own! The cowardly Dems deserted him because they were afraid of Republican boogymen and they attacked him sometimes with the GOP! They should all be fired and probably will be!
Republicans refused to work with Obama from the day after he signed the Oath of Office and they haven't! They got paid while doing nothing else but attacking Obama daily & killing any and all of his bills, particularly the ones that would help recovery!
I think Republicans get off on inflicting maximum pain on Americans, they never seem to tire of it and they come up with new ways to do it almost every day!
