Ted Cruz Is the Only Candidate Using Trump to His Advantage

OK, credit where it's due. Tailgunner Ted Cruz is the only other candidate in the Republican field who has reacted smartly to the sudden arrival of the Libidinous Visitor. While shoring up his natural base of support from the Bible-banging hayshakers in Iowa, Cruz also has refrained from trying to harsh the mellow of the Summer of Trump. And now he's pulled the shrewdest play of all.

The Texas GOP senator's campaign announced Thursday that he's invited Trump to join a rally planned at the Capitol soon to pressure lawmakers on opposing the nuclear agreement. The rally is sponsored by Tea Party Patriots, Center for Security Policy, and the Zionist Organization of America. "We are thankful for all their hard work on this effort and will have more details on time, date, and location as they are finalized," the Cruz campaign said.

This is a sweet move by both men; the Libidinous Visitor could use a little of the Jesus glow in which Cruz regularly bathes himself. But it is sweetest for Cruz who, alone among the single-digit crowd, has not yet picked a fight with the frontrunner, and is thus so far untouched by the Eye of Sauron. Now, he gets to perform his act in front of one of the huge crowds that have been attending the Libidinous Visitor's every word, and on an issue that does not necessarily bring out his theocratic side. He can talk about our great, good friend Israel without intimating that all the Jews should go home so that Jesus can come back and disembowel people. He can talk about foreign policy to an audience that, frankly, doesn't know much about it beyond the fact that all the Mexicans should go home, period. Cruz is laying in the weeds here. I think he's going to be the "surprise" of the Iowa caucuses.
