Pope supports book about gay parents that was banned by Venice mayor

Piccolo Uovo (Little Egg) is an Italian children’s picture book about an egg that goes on a journey to meet families of all shapes and colors. Author Francesca Pardi wrote the story to help children understand and accept different family structures (including same sex) and the title was thrown into the international spotlight when the conservative Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro banned it and other titles with similar messages from municipal kindergartens last month.

Now the book is back in the news for having an unlikely fan: Pope Francis.

Through his staff, the Pope wrote a letter to the author thanking her for the book.

“His holiness is grateful for the thoughtful gesture and for the feelings which it evoked, hoping for an always more fruitful activity in the service of young generations and the spread of genuine human and Christian values,” Peter B Wells, a senior official at the Vatican secretariat of state, wrote in a letter obtained by the London Guardian.

Good move on the part of the Pope, in my opinion. I know that his stance on gay marriage is his least enlightened area. This seems like a small step in the right direction.
