The weirdest news story in India right now

Last edited Fri Aug 28, 2015, 06:50 AM - Edit history (1)

For anybody tired of vapid American gossip, have some vapid Indian gossip:

http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/a-burnt-body-and-a-tip-off-how-the-sheena-bora-murder-case-unfolded-1211327

So...

In 2012 a body was found on a back road 50 miles outside of Mumbai. Nobody claimed the remains, and so the police took a DNA sample and cremated the body (cremation is very common in India).

Earlier this year, the police received an anonymous tip connecting the body to entertainment executive Indrani Mukerjea. Her younger sister Sheena had allegedly been in America since 2012, but the informant said that she was actually dead and the body found in 2012 was hers.

The police did a little background snooping, and then were able to arrest Mukerjea's driver on drug charges. The police questioned him about Sheena and the driver broke and confessed to killing her and dumping the body on Mukerjea's orders. The police brought Indrani and her husband Peter in for questioning. She had a pre-rehearsed story but under questioning it fell apart.

Here's where it gets weird:

As the cover story unraveled, it came out that Sheena was not Indrani's little sister, but her daughter. And Indrani is significantly older than she has claimed. Sheena was raised by Indrani's parents and did not know Indrani was her mother. She had another child, a boy older than Sheena named Mikhail, whom everyone also thought of as Indrani's brother. Mikhail knows who their parents are but never told Sheena (the biological father has still not been identified, though Mikhail says he will make it public soon).

Also, Indrani had a previous marriage (after Sheena and Mikhail were born) with a man named Sanjeev Khanna, and he has also been implicated in the murder and dumping the body. (He is not the father of Sheena and Mikhail, though Sanjeev and Indrani did have a daughter together.)

Here's where it gets weirder:

Peter Mukerjea has a son Rahul through a previous marriage. Sheena was in a relationship with him. Peter approved of the relationship but Indrani did not (Peter, remember, thought Sheena was his sister-in-law, not step-daughter). But Indrani's cover story was that she was opposed to the relationship and sent Sheena to the US to end it.

Both Rahul and Mikhail tried for a long time after Sheena "went to America" to contact her, but eventually assumed she had started a new life. (They claim this, at least.)

To further complicate things, there's apparently an inheritance at stake; Sheena had a large trust fund (presumably from the father) which has now disappeared.

Soap opera writers couldn't write this.

6. Young woman murdered and body dumped

to decompose on railway tracks.

Mother (and maybe stepfather and/or former stepfather) plotted death of woman. Family servant was willing to do the murder rather than go to police.

Women get murdered by their families pretty frequently: often for money (dowries, life insurance, a missing inheritance) or breaking stupid sexual taboos (like dating a guy your parent is opposed to).

Juicy gossip. Aka femicide.
