Reading about Beethoven's measure of the aristocrats makes me glad for my politics today. Lots of voices, all free to speak their mind and each equal under the law, working toward the goal of making this life better for ALL. That is the essence of Democratic politics.

I'd extend that thought to the same goes for every single human being: None are worth more -- or less -- than any other under the law of the land.

(23,730 posts)though really I think both would be libs in their own unique, weird way in 2015: 1800s politics are pretty damn unrecognizable to us today; Goethe even had a proto-hippie sort of science he lent his name to; no room for slack-jawed fundie permavirgins here!
