We appreciate your enthusiasm to serve, (and) have been overwhelmed by the strong response, the Department of Natural Resources posted on its website.
At least 200 of the volunteers are equipment operators, many with their own backhoes and bulldozers able to cut fire lines.

Volunteer to fight wildfires

After processing thousands of inquiries over the past week, coordinators from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources have placed trained volunteers and equipment operators on rosters, directed other volunteers to community service opportunities and deployed some volunteers on wildfires.
With those tasks completed, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources will end staffing of its temporary volunteer-intake centers in Omak, Colville and Castle Rock at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27.

I posted this article over in the Washington group last week, after they made the announcement:
First time in state history: Volunteers asked to join firefight

They had so many responses to that call...thousands on that very first day. When you look out your window every morning and can't see or smell anything but smoke (knowing that fire is burning over thirty miles away) it kind of puts the direness of our situation into a whole new perspective.
Please, let it rain!
