I'll never forget the tales of the bombing at the State Department on 9-11 or there being two shooters at Sandy Hook.

I usually wait at least 12 hours before the facts distinguish themselves from rumors.

It's sounding more and more like a very personal local tragedy which is possibly a legacy of our toxic racial heritage but we will not understand what happened until all of the facts come out--if they ever do.

And while not misinformation per se, I remember the plane that crashed in Shanksville was described as having crashed "in the Pittsburgh area" which freaked me out because my sister was living in Pittsburgh at the time. In fact, Shanksville is more than 60 miles away from Pittsburgh.

I mentioned on another thread the "white van" hysteria surrounding the 2002 DC Sniper shootings, and after each shooting white vans in the vicinity were being stopped and searched, and yet it turned out the shooters were driving a blue Chevy Caprice.

I'll also remember the New York Post's inflated death tolls after the Boston Marathon bombing.
