Would Bush I have been POTUS w/o being Reagans VP?

My first 2 POTUS votes were for Carter in 76&80 (while living in deep red Grand Rapids Mi). I voted for Dukakis in 88 while living in downstate Ill. I wasn't very political then, so I don't recall too much about Bush I, then; I know a whole lot more.
Can educate me please?

1. no, he sought the nomination in 1980 and got blown to smithereens

in votes, states, and delegates. He almost didn't make the ticket, and only did when RR realized that Ford on the ticket would bring up Nixon's political ghost.

I still do think that the GOP still woulda won 1988 because there were a lotta people Reagan coulda put on his ticket, given that Carter's approvals were sub-40 (which actually means something, unlike sub-50). In 1988, the Dems were similar to GOP today; still in the wilderness and in denial about how out of the mainstream they were perceived to be.

Bush's & Hinkley's were all palls.........

Then you add in that Bush was hangin' around Dallas when JFK was shot

Then you add in that Bush helped with the October Surprise

Then you add in that Bush helped Iran/Contra
