UPDATE:
A tornado watch is in effect until midnight in eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, along with corresponding parts of Kansas and Missouri. The watch stretches northward into Minnesota.
Storms have already begun firing up north of Omaha.

Put the car in the garage, move indoors things that can get blown around, and check on the kids if they're camping.
A storm system that is unusually strong for late summer is moving into the region today, ushering in a threat of powerful winds, damaging hail and even a few tornadoes.

(1,683 posts)Most of the damage i have seen from hurricanes in Virginia and now in Florida were caused by tornadoes spinning off the sides of the hurricane.

(7,911 posts)I grew up in tornado alley. Glad to be out of there. Of course it's harder to take shelter from earthquakes.

It's always crapshoot with these things. A bunch of much cooler air is coming down.
