If America were truly a "Christian" nation Jimmy Carter should have won reelection.

Reagan was Hollywood whose wife consulted psychics. Jimmy Carter was a Sunday School teacher, who practiced what he preached. Just look at Trump's polling numbers. Republican Evangelicals are inconsistent at best.

The are hateful, spiteful, evil, ignorant, and insane.

I am tired of pussy footing around this issue.

All religious fanatics (globally) should be called out at every opportunity !!!

They should be publicly shamed.

They are a scourge on this planet.

but for me, Carter was a disappointment at that time because he seemed to be giving in to what is now called the Third Way. What people knew of him was very much a product of the main stream media - the big three networks and a couple news magazines. I suspect that Reagen won in part due to a lack of enthusiasm for Carter. Just a reminder for us today to support the Democratic nominee even if our first choice doesn't get that nomination.

know how to deal with the Washington insiders. I am not sure what that meant anymore but it was kind of the idea of city boy vs country boy. I seem to remember that it was a criticism about that fact that he believed in playing fair.

as an outsider, a centrist, and a spot of sunshine after the Watergate turmoil. His administration was "leftist" only in his environmentalism. It was a very centrist administration. Teddy Kennedy mounted a primary challenge on Carter from the left in 1980. Carter had to fight his way through that before he could organize a campaign against Reagan. The White House staff had problems and Hamilton Jordan often fell down politically and failed to protect Carter. Jimmy Carter became more progressive and moved to the left after he left the presidency.

The Billy Graham crusade was in full force in the 70s. Prosperity theology and end times horrors played right into Reagan's greed is good message right along with the hawkishness in the Middle East that served to reinforce the end times messaging.

It was really disgusting. I remember that my parents attended one and afterwards, my dad would yell "I am prosperity!!" whenever he was feeling discouraged.

He did it (so he claimed) to protect his fellow church goers who might be put at some sort of risk (terrorists? ninjas?) if he sat among them on Sundays. Said the preacher was cool with it. The Lord too.
