I am here nearly every day, have been for more than a decade . More than 95% of the time I spend on DU is spent reading and rec'ing post I think are important, with little bursts of posts here and there. I often look at rec lists though to see where other DUers priorities are.

(14,255 posts)I rec things that I find interesting, whether I agree with them of not. Some here do keep track of that stuff, and a while back someone very bizarrely posted they they were keeping track of who rec'd what, like a seventh grade slam book thing, but hey, a couple of clicks and look! DU keeps track for you! I wouldn't worry about it. I don't, and now I think it is funny if someone refers to it as a sort of threat.

What a waste of time.
tk2kewl
(18,133 posts)certainly not everything interesting is important. But I rec hoping to increase the visibility of certain OPs and topics. Do you think recs accomplish that?
tk2kewl
(18,133 posts)mostly a curiosity, but I do find it interesting to see what people rec.

(22,336 posts)Maybe I agree with it, maybe I find it interesting or worth reading or worth more attention.

(36,448 posts)as an informal bookmark system, or something, while other people just like recommending any and everything. All in all, I've found it's a useless system to judge the merits of a thread, but it is a good indicator of what people are looking at.
tk2kewl
(18,133 posts)but of course there are also "actual" bookmarks which I use as well, usually in hopes of getting back to a long post or video.

(3,447 posts)I may have known that once upon a time, but if so it sure did slip my memory. Of course to be fair, I almost never use Recs anyway because I almost never remember they're there. I probably ought to do that, though.

(3,447 posts)...which makes sense, but somehow slipped my notice (or my memory). Either way, old age is killing me!
Thanks ZombieHorde.
And Rec'ced, if for no other reason than to remind other forgetful people like myself.

(29,047 posts)If I'm on DU everyday, seeing these factions rise up gives many of the posts on those subjects additional context. Faction banners have concerned Snowden, BLM, Anonymous, the Roman Catholic Church, etc. If I go a week or so without reading DU, fewer posts make sense to me, because many posts are partially meta.
tk2kewl
(18,133 posts)That is often what I learn as well (I think). I wasn't expecting this OP to get much attention but I am finding it very interesting to see how others view the whole idea of recommendations.

(9,610 posts)You can certainly check into third way meme threads to see who is on team "I got mine, F you" currently. But, the handles are always the same. They do get new members from time to time. Good to see who is not on your side.
tk2kewl
(18,133 posts)is often similar to the third way situation you describe. I check when I see something that has a lot of support and wonder why
sharp_stick
(14,400 posts)when someone gets PPR'd or timed out just to see who's reccing their posts just out of curiosity.
I try to only rec threads that I agree with and bookmark posts that I find interesting or may want to go back too but I know some people use the rec system more or less as a bookmarking system.

tk2kewl
(18,133 posts)I check to see if it is being rec'ed by DUers I who's OPs I respect and follow
Spazito
(50,396 posts)if, as you say, I don't quite know what to make of the OP and the message it is meant to convey. I often rec without comment because whatever I might have posted has already been stated and much more succinctly and eloquently than I could have done.

(26,549 posts)As a result, I don't look at rec lists because it doesn't tell you much of anything.
But there's plenty of people who treat clicking "rec" as "This OP perfectly captures my fundamental beliefs".
It would have been nicer if they used a different verb that did not imply agreement.
Iggo
(47,561 posts)Rec is short for recommend. When I rec a post I'm marking it as recommended reading. I'll do it for a beautifully argued point, a picture of an adorable baby human or animal, or for a hilarious train-wreck of an OP. It just means that it's something I recommend that the rest of you read.

I've gotten pretty good at it, unless it's a CnP title. Of course, some are so obvious, it's not much of a challenge.
