After nearly 100 years of rumors and historical speculation, DNA testing has confirmed that President Warren Harding had a child out of wedlock – his only biological child – with mistress Nan Britton.

Britton first came forward publically with the claim that her daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was Harding’s daughter in a 1927 autobiography “The President’s Daughter.” In her account, Britton detailed a steamy six-year-long affair with the 29th president, including one encounter in a White House closet, before his untimely death in 1923.

At the time of its publishing, the book was met with public ridicule and widely discounted as the stuff of pornographic fiction. Britton was labeled a “sex pervert” and “degenerate,” and a book was even written to counter her claims about Harding, who was married to Florence Mabel Harding.

Harding historian James Robenalt compares Britton to the Monica Lewinsky of her time.

“Nan Britton was someone who had to live through a lot of attacks … and I think her story was a lot like Monica Lewinsky because there was a real shaming process,” Robenalt said. “She was just picking up for her daughter, who we now know was Harding’s daughter, and she was just viciously attacked for it.”

1. They are trying to rehabilitate this guy's legacy as a good fiscal steward,etc. In actual fact, his

"machine" picked good people, and he spent most of his time drinking and playing cards and philandering. I don't think he was an isolationist out of principle, he just didn't want to work too hard.

His father was said to say that if he'd been born a girl, he would have been a prostitute--hardly "PC" but the guy did have an appetite. Nan Britton was not his only paramour by a long shot. She was just the only one who reproduced.

Harding was most certainly "handsome" -- he appealed to women because of his "good looks" (so the campaign lore goes--people were less sophisticated then, certainly).

One of the most amusing stories had to do with the campaign "smear" (every fault is eventually a fashion) that Harding had a black ancestor. Rather than become upset when asked about this, his response was something along the lines of "How would I know? I wasn't there!" The press cut him a great deal of slack, he had a teflon quality about him.

His wife, too, was rich and skilled at campaign strategy behind the scenes. I get the impression she understood the full flavor of the man, warts and all.

I think his campaign was one of the earlier models of a 'scripted' scenario. His wife was very savvy and sophisticated, politically, and involved in the process of getting him elected.

I also think his campaign staff was very effective--they knew how to prosecute an agenda and close ranks. The 'principle' only had to smile, be charming, pose for pictures with that fine nose and firm jaw, and make quips that please the scribes.

I wonder how much sub-saharan ancestry the DNA coughed up--that might answer that question, as well!
