Jeb Bush had a run-in with Black Lives Matter in Las Vegas

Mr. Bush was interrupted early on by a white young man who yelled out “Black Lives Matter” only minutes into the event, before quietly being led out.

“Look, we have serious problems,” Mr. Bush began, head bent and arms outstretched to the questioner. “And these problems have gotten worse in the last few years. Communities can no longer trust the basic institutions in our society.” While there “is racism in America” and denial of that issue is a large part of the problem, Mr. Bush said, “significant progress” had been made.

He leaned on the importance of education as a solution. “With all due respect, a child who is educated, who can go to college and live a life of purpose and meaning — it’s important,” Mr. Bush said as the mostly white crowd of about 100 erupted in applause.

As Mr. Bush exited the room, shaking hands with the crowd, including local black community leaders, a group of about a dozen young people followed him through the community center chanting “black lives matter” with their arms raised. Mr. Bush turned and waved before making his exit.
