An analysis of federal data reveals a pattern of intimidation-by-firearm.
The day seemed to be ending like any other, with people traveling their familiar routes home and the sun descending behind the red maple and cottonwood trees. Yvonne, a black woman in her 30s, was driving with her five young children on a two-lane road in Oakland County, Michigan, 45 minutes northwest of Detroit. She had just eased her car into the right lane when she glanced at her rearview mirror and saw a dark green Bonneville speeding up behind her. The vehicle abruptly pulled to the left, beside Yvonne, and kept pace with her car until they were both stopped by a red light. She looked over and saw the driver, a white man in his 20s. Next to him was a white woman of the same age. Yvonnes window was cracked. A report of the March 8, 2013 incident notes Yvonnes clear memory of what happened next. She heard the man scream, Learn how to drive, niggers!
When the light changed, the man swerved in front of Yvonnes car. (Her real name is redacted in law enforcement documents.) She tried to slow down to avoid him, but he pressed his breaks, too. Yvonne saw the Bonnevilles passenger reach under the seat and come up with an L-shaped object that the woman then passed to the driver. He began to wave it threateningly. Yvonnes kids, realizing it was a handgun, started to scream.
A little farther down the road, traffic came to a standstill, trapping Yvonne and her children, who then ranged in age from 7 to 16. At the first opportunity, she cranked the wheel, made a U-turn, and sped off in the other direction, racing to her house, where she felt safe.
Hate crimes and gun violence are usually treated as separate issues, except when they tragically collide, as they did earlier this summer when 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly shot and killed nine members of a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina. But events like Charleston are ultimately outliers. It is the kind of hate crime that Yvonne experienced that is reflective of the far more ordinary ways in which firearms are used to terrorize and intimidate people.

(6,498 posts)It tends to get describes as a triple murder, which focuses our attention on those last few moments of terror.
But the months of terror, leading up to it, day in and day out, should also not be forgotten.

Are there some who get off on scaring people with their firearms? Yes, but the huge majority of firearms owners are responsible, law abiding citizens who are peacefully exercising their RKBA.

(6,324 posts)In most of rural America seeing a farmer with a pistol on their belt and/or rifle in the back window of a pickup truck as they go to town for gas, a meal or supplies is perfectly normal and nobody is intimidated.
Don't project your own insecurities and listed exposure to matters on all people.

(6,498 posts)Some guy from Texas took his gun to a Costco.
He was kicked out, though.
His wife posted a photo of him carrying his gun in the store on facebook.
Along with a bunch of right wing memes, of course.
We don't want that shit here in Iowa.
Too many people are dying.
Too many ruined lives.
Don't try to tell me that this shit doesn't scare people.
That's exactly what it is intended to do.

(9,951 posts)but if open carry is allowed in your state, then it's going to happen.
BTW, private businesses are free to disallow firearms on their premises.

(9,951 posts)I open carry every time I go out to take care of our livestock or go hiking, when in town, I carry concealed, that doesn't make me a terrorist, it makes me a citizen that's exercising my 2A right.
stone space
(6,498 posts)Why do you think Costco kicked him out?
Because he was terrorizing their customers and their employees, that's why.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)They asked him to leave because they have a no guns policy in their store. Iowa does allow open carry, but businesses are free to forbid firearms on their property.

(10,201 posts)Like you said, a farmer coming into town for supplies in rural America is fine. But when these assholes use it as a protest tool, or when 20 of these pickle-shits descend on a coffee shop because 'Merica, they are being intimidating assholes.

He should have been arrested immediately and all of his guns confiscated for life.
Why should people like that be allowed to terrorize folks with their guns?
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Open carry is legal in Iowa, all the store could do is ask him to leave, if he complies, then no crime has been committed, if he refuses, then the only charge would be trespass, which is a minor misdemeanor.

CORALVILLE (KWWL) -
Family and friends are coming together to remember Andrea Farrington, the 20-year-old killed at Coral Ridge Mall on Friday night.
In a phone conversation, Andrea's uncle, Chad Wilcox, shared some memories with KWWL.
When asked what he remembers most about Andrea, Chad says the fact that she was fun-loving and energetic. He says she talked to everyone. Even if she didn't know you, she was going to talk to you and bring up your mood.
When asked what he was going to miss most about Andrea, he said the relationship Andrea had with his five-year-old-daughter. Wilcox says it's sad to know that Andrea won't be around to mentor his daughter.
Chad also cleared up some information. He says that, while Andrea was going to move back to Grinnell to be closer to her mom and sister, she was going to make the drive to Coralville so she could continue working at the museum because it was her dream job. He said she hoped to pick up more hours as well.
In addition to working at the museum, Chad also said that Andrea was planning to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
After getting word the Iowa Children's Museum was going to dedicate their turtle exhibit to Andrea, we asked Chad where her love of turtles came from. Chad says it came out of nowhere. He says Andrea and the turtle just clicked, like they were "soul mates." He says Andrea would send several Snapchats a week of her and Peter the turtle.
The family is very thankful for the outpouring of support from everyone, including many people they don't know. Chad says while they can't respond to it all, they are reading it all.
On behalf of Andrea, he wants to tell everyone to keep smiling. He says Andrea would never quit smiling, so no one else should.
Visitation for Andrea continues until 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Hope Church in Montezuma.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hope Church.

I don't believe for a moment that you honestly believe that Arizona Lives Matter.
If you did, you would have supported these terrorists being arrested, jailed, and having their guns confiscated for life.
These terrorists were threatening an OCCUPYPHEONIX encampment filled with families and children with their AR-15s.
There could have been a massacre that day. But the cops just stood there and did absolutely nothing, as you can see from the video.
Instead, you are laughing about how Your Gun Rites Trumped Arizona Lives.
Like I care what you believe, ooops, I don't.
