Every year, from around July 17 to August 24, our planet Earth crosses the orbital path of Comet Swift-Tuttle, the parent of the Perseid meteor shower. Debris from this comet litters the comets orbit, but we dont really get into the thick of the comet rubble until after the first week of August. The bits and pieces from Comet Swift-Tuttle slam into the Earths upper atmosphere at some 210,000 kilometers (130,000 miles) per hour, lighting up the nighttime with fast-moving Perseid meteors.

So there is that.

(6,604 posts)8. Gotta hate mosquitos.
Hope you can work around them somehow.
Rained much earlier here too, something I'd forgotten and was only reminded of after plopping into a cushioned deck chair in preparation for an early preview. Ugh!

(31,464 posts)10. It was beautiful this morning!
Skies so clear and dark here in New England, I could easily see the Milky Way. I went out at about 3:30 and saw about 20 meteors in half an hour. Just to add to the experience, the coyotes serenaded me from across the lake. Quite an experience!

so then I hit the couch, passed out and woke up at 7 am to bright blue skies
maybe I'll try again tonight
