Rusty didn't seem sweet or playful at all when Jared Piper first met him. He was chained up in a yard in Phoenix, Arizona, barking at passersby all day. But one day Jared decided to stop and say hello.
But Rusty's conditions were deplorable: Jared had never seen him off the chain, he had flies all over his body and a tumor on his belly. Jared knew he had to get Rusty somewhere safe.
One day as Jared was stopping to hang out with Rusty, his owner came out of the house. She casually told Jared that Rusty had been chained up for 10-15 years ... it was all he knew.
Jared told her he wasn't leaving without Rusty. At first she resisted, telling Jared that Rusty would bite or attack him, but he was insistent.

(9,426 posts)So glad he was rescued, and now knows what LOVE is. Some people should never have pets. Rusty looks so happy now, he deserves a great life and it looks like he has that now. Thanks for saving his life.

(19,108 posts)Please spay and neuter all of your pets. Unfortunately there are thousands of Rustys across this country because people do not spay and neuter their animals.
And please rescue a dog if you need a family pet, there is no reason to ever buy a pet from a breeder. If you think you absolutely need a specific breed, tell your local animal shelter exactly what you are looking for and they can generally find the right dog for you.
Nothing is more frustrating for me than to hear about friends buying their dogs from the pet store.

(5,927 posts)I've never been able to understand why some people buy designer pets when there are so many lovable mongrels homeless...they make the best pets.
All 3 of our cats are rescues...they're the absolute best.

(9,527 posts)My parents have two Australian cattle dogs from a rescue.
Yes one of them suffers from significant anxiety from having been abused but she adores my parents and the other dog. She loves to hop in my mom's lap when scared because she knows mom won't let her get hurt.
The other dog is so confident that he won't stop trying to defend his yard from the black cats with the racing stripe, no matter how many times it ends poorly for him.
As a person who lives with "black cats with the racing stripes" in the area, I know what you mean.
Here in Arkansas, we are having a Rabies epidemic in skunks.
We are advised to shoot them if we see them acting strange in the daytime.
If I see a skunk in the daytime....it IS acting strange.
There are so many that Fish & Game don't even want us to call them anymore.

(39,909 posts)They are Working Country Cats (mousers)
Both have been neutered (one big male, one female), and have all their shots.
They have 24/7 access to outside or inside through a Cat Door.
Aside from fleas and ticks during the Bad Season, they are both extremely health and happy,
and we use the appropriate medicines to control the ticks & fleas (they DO sleep on our beds)
The female is Queen of the Roost, and even though she is 1/2 the size of the male, he does what she tells him to do.
We live in The Woods, and both of our Mousers have developed the skills to take care of themselves,
and at the same time, have good House Manners when they come inside, though the male can get carried away playing and draw blood. He doesn't like to lose games and gets revenge with his teeth.
It is heartbreaking, but some soulless people seem to believe that when they don't want their pet anymore,
they can drive them out to the country, take their collar off, and their "pet" will find a good "country home"
with plenty of food and love. Far from the truth.
Most people that live in the Country have ALL the pets and stock they can afford, and will see your pet as a "threat" and don't have the money to spend on some else's "pet". It costs several hundred dollars to have a female neutered and shots. These former "pets" are usually removed unless extremely lucky.
Very few find this New Home, many are eaten the first night by coyotes or dogs.

(5,927 posts)some humans should be neutered, I would not argue. I am disgusted and horrified by human arrogance and the animal cruelty that results.
I find it interesting that one of the DUers that I trust would also be a kitty protector. Righteous.
BTW that picture is just fucking adorable. Why am I such a sucker for these little shits? These are the questions.

A few years back, we raised a Rescue Fawn,
and the big male bonded with her.
They were Best Buds for a year.
After staying with us for a year and a half,
Blossom joined the herd of Does that run around here in the Fall....as Does do to prepare to have their babies.
Sometimes we think we see her.....but how do you really tell?
We decided that ALL does are now our very loved SweeTea.

Wonderful. Beautiful.
I wish I had a picture to share with you of Alvin. Alvin is a squirrel that I feed everyday. He's getting to trust me more and more. My godz that little boy is cure. My greatest ambition in life is to someday pet him.
Good on ya bvar.
bvar22
(39,909 posts)PM me and you can pet the cat. You may even be able to walk (hunt) with him in the Woods if he trusts you.
After that, we can have Green Beans & Cornbread.
If he likes you, and you leave your car window down, he may go home with you.
He is very nosy, and jumps in people's car windows when they park here.
Twice, people have had to bring him back.
(He doesn't like it when the car starts moving, and raises all fury claws and teeth have.)

I hope the evil witch who left him tied for years faced animal cruelty charges. She is pond scum.

(13,058 posts)And as far as I'm concerned Rusty is not the animal in this scenario. The person who kept him chained up all those years it the animal. And she should be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

(63,221 posts)He deserves the best. He's such a gentle angel, especially after having put up with all that he's been through.
I honestly don't understand why people get pets in the first place if they are just going to neglect and abuse them!
But then again look at all the people who bring children in the world only to do the same thing to them. So many people are just so selfish and sick.

(38,325 posts)His teeth are worn from chewing on his chain.
Chaining a dog like that is against the law here so he ended up in the shelter. Animal control took him.
He's not been one of our better shelter death-row dogs, but he's always loved people no matter the past abuse. All people. Even bad people. Humans are his friends. He can't see it any other way.
This is him with dingo:
They are best friends forever, my wife adopted him as a big gentle chew toy for adopted most difficult shelter dog ever dingo, and it's worked out well.

(14,176 posts)wonderful story
not to bring the thread down but how can anyone just laugh off the concern and jokingly almost boast that the dog has been on a chain for 10-15 years? I suppose at least she shrugged and allowed her dog to be taken. Many other animal abusers would just say "he/she is my dog and I can do what I want, now get off my property before I shoot you" and there is not much you can do if the owner's "only" crime is to chain their dog up 24/7 and not give it any attention.
