University of Texas considers moving Confederate statues on campus
AUSTIN, TEXAS | BY JON HERSKOVITZ
A panel at the University of Texas recommended moving to museums or leaving in place, with notes of explanation, statues of Confederate leaders on campus that have been the subject to recent protests, the school said on Monday.
The statues, placed decades ago on the campus of the left-leaning university in Austin, a liberal city in conservative Texas, gained new attention in June amid the debate in South Carolina about taking down the Confederate battle flag on the state's capitol grounds.
A month ago, South Carolina removed the Confederate battle flag, a symbol of the South's pro-slavery legacy, from the state capitol grounds in the wake of a white gunman fatally shooting nine black worshipers at a historic church.
A task force report in Austin made five recommendations for the statues that ranged from leaving them in place with plaques that would provide historical context to removing them to an exhibit elsewhere on campus.
No deadline has been set for when the university must make a decision.

(25,816 posts)1. Confusing headline
It sounds like they're considering moving them from somewhere else, on to the campus.
But yeah, move them OFF campus.

Yes, the natural question evoked by that headline is "Did they have some OFF campus?"
Or do they have a bunch ON campus, but they want to move them around, like chess pieces.

An open offer along the lines of "Got a confederate statue you don't want any more? Send it to us and we'll put it on campus."

(13 posts)4. Lotsa People Think...
That the University of Texas is the liberal "open minded" school of the state and that rival schools like Texas A&M are a hub for racism and intolerance. Fact is Texas has had way more racial "incidents" then any other school in the state. Everything from frat incidents, to attempted bleach throwing at minority students, and other racist things. I know kids there who think there is a real current racism problem on that campus.
