Coca-Cola is now supporting research on obesity that

claims exercise is the way to go to keep healthy weight (cbc news) as opposed to things such as staying away from fast food and empty calories. This is advocacy research. Right up there with big tabacco and big oil. Also the conservative Harper put in place knew funding rules for research in Canada saying scientists need to have some backing from corporations before government will fund them. Pretty soon there will be a huge body of pseudoscience out their making people's lives worse off (as opposed to what science used to have as a goal which was to solve problems humans face). And higher education institutions are being intellectually gutted from within. And Jeb wants to end medicare. And of course the GOP stifles all kinds of environmental regulations. All further evidence to me that the rich powers that be on the GOP want a die off of people before the middle class grows old and takes from the system. The rich of course will be able to afford thrapies to live longer.

that should be viewed cautiously, at best.

The difference being that those two groups you mentioned often pay for research that is scrutinized by the government at every step of the process due to regulatory requirements. It doesn't make much sense for the government or anyone else to have to pay for research required to bring products to the market.

Just because a product is taken off the market soon after release, doesn't mean the government failed at anything. If testing were stringent enough to cover every conceivable (or inconceivable) risk, only the richest Americans would be able to afford those products.
