New York Times: Bad Decision by Senator Schumer

New York’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer, has cast his lot with Republican presidential candidates, other hardliners and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in declaring his opposition to the nuclear agreement that President Obama and five other world leaders negotiated with Iran. Given Mr. Schumer’s wrong-headed and irresponsible decision, Democrats may want to reconsider whether he is the best candidate to be their next leader in the Senate, a job he desperately wants.

In addition to being the third-ranking Democratic leader in the Senate and a major party fund-raiser, Mr. Schumer is Congress’ most influential Jewish member. His choice could affect the votes of other lawmakers who are wavering. Whether to support the nuclear deal is the most consequential foreign policy decision facing lawmakers since the Iraq war and opponents are waging a fierce multi-million dollar campaign to defeat it.

Mr. Schumer is a smart man and a clever politician but his arguments for opposing the agreement are no more convincing than those put forward by other opponents. While supporters of the deal, including the major powers and most nuclear experts, acknowledge it has weaknesses, the fact is, it offers strong and unprecedented curbs on Iran’s nuclear activities....

Any opponent of the deal bears a responsibility to propose a credible alternative but Mr. Schumer has repeated the same fanciful talking points that Mr. Netanyahu and the Republicans have espoused. “Better to keep U.S. sanctions in place, strengthen them, enforce secondary sanctions on other nations, and pursue the hard-trodden path of diplomacy once more, difficult as it may be,” Mr. Schumer said. Such suggestions ignore the fact that the major powers are more likely to abandon the sanctions altogether if the United States reneges on the deal and to refuse, along with Iran, to reopen negotiations....

war-making power in 2002-2003.

He's an unreconstructed neocon, someone in the same ideological strain as Tom Cotton and John Bolton when it comes to war and peace issues.

Talk of New Leader (Updated) (Video)"

MoveOn said its 8 million members will withhold funding for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and from any Democratic candidate who sides with Schumer.

“While not unexpected, it is outrageous and unacceptable that the Democrat who wants to be the party’s leader in the Senate is siding with the Republican partisans and neoconservative ideologues who are trying to scrap this agreement and put us on the path to war,” said MoveOn.org Political Action Executive Director Ilya Sheyman in a statement.

“Our country doesn’t need another Joe Lieberman in the Senate, and it certainly doesn’t need him as Democratic leader. The vast majority of Democratic voters — the people who elected President Obama in part because of our shared belief that war must always be a last resort — will not stand for it.”

thought Joe merely played his scripted part in killing the Public Option and watering down the ACA.

He had nothing to lose at the time, and was perfect for the role of Judas in the Kabuki Theater of Health Insurance "reform".

I can respect that but he'll have to pay the consequences. If it were me, I would vote and then resign as a point of honor as he's completely at odds with the leader of his party. on one of the most important issues.

"Curiously Schumer's defection from the Obama bandwagon is being seen as bearish crude/bullish the deal in the following way:

1) Schumer wanted to oppose the deal to appeal to his pro-Israel base, but didn't really want the deal to fail.

2) once the administration became confident of the deal's passage, they gave him the green light to go ahead with his harmless announcement.

Following that logic, the announcement was actually bearish."

Oil was indeed down today by a couple more percent.

We trusted and enabled Leiberman for far too long. Hopefully this will at least prevent CS from going so far over to the dark side that he does similar real damage. I especially hope this is the beginning of the end of his political career.
