General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI thought my dog was dead this morning. We both got hit by a car.
Man, I love her so much that I cry just thinking back on it. And then she comes over and kisses the tears away.
I had just tossed a bag of her poop in the trashcan and we crossed with the traffic light but a guy made a left turn and hit us both. In that flash I just was thinking 'don't let this guy hit her.' I let go of the leash and jumped up, landed on his hood with my butt then rolled off to the driver's side. He stopped about 10 feet through the crosswalk and I couldn't see my dog! I really thought she under that car...
When I got to my feet I saw that she was in front of his car. She has bounced off the bumper or scooted sideways at the last moment. He didn't pull over, didn't get out and said he had the right of way so I pulled the front license plate off his car and tossed it on the sidewalk. Pointed at a bystander and told them to call the police. ETA: the driver did get out and wait for police after I took his license plate.
I don't think he ever saw me until I was on the hood of his car. Older guy, maybe shouldn't be driving. I'm bruised but it could have been so much worse. So much worse.
Someone's getting salmon tonight!

He didn't mean to hit us but probably shouldn't be driving any more.
Just had a soak in the tub and seem okay. I credit years of skiing and surfing with teaching me how to take a tumble.

(27,985 posts)If the driver is incompetent (also, he is bound by law to stop in cases like this -- I think his actions make him a hit-and-run driver) , the police (and your state's DMV) should know about it. He should not be on the road.

(102,352 posts)my beloved girlie dog. And, like you, I could not fathom surviving without my sweet girl.
How smart of you to grab the license plate. Kudos, Kudos, Kudos! I assume the police are "on it"...?
Beyond the too old drivers, the distracted, on cell phone drivers, the too young to drive aggressive impatient drivers and all the other dangers, right turn on red is the very worst thing that ever happened to pedestrians. And of course at least 30% of drivers act as though they don't know what a pedestrian crossing with light is.
Best wishes to you both. I have been "gifted" recently by the completion of a 5.5 mile bike trail just a half mile across open space from my home. This now allows me to access the main part of the trail through a protected underpass across a main road thoroughfare and I can not tell you what a relief it has been. I still have to contend with some out of control cyclists, but I'll take my chances with them over those drivers in their killer SUVs and trucks.
Hugs to you and your pup!

(15,805 posts)Even if you think you're not badly hurt, it's a good idea to get a medical check up just to be safe, and get something to ease the soreness that is sure to follow. Maybe if this guy is ticketed and you file a incident report with his insurance company, you can help get this guy off the road. Old folks can pose a threat if they aren't even alert enough to notice a traffic light and pedestrians, and then he has the temerity to argue he had a right to hit you? Thankfully no one was badly injured, but will his next victim be as lucky?
Pretty dog, she has a sweet and lovable face. It could have had a much more tragic ending, so I'm glad she's OK too.

I'm out with the dog (Ozwald!) twice a day when I'm home...sheesh, it's like a death trap out there! Even with sidewalks, every block I try to look, look again and maybe one more time. Even with that, I've almost been hit.
My old dentist was mowed down in Orange County, CA while she was out jogging...a girl in her white convertible Cabriole, made a right turn without looking...dentist had both legs broken. When the cops came, the girl was all cuddly to the cops...cops gave the dentist a TICKET while she laid on the ground waiting for the ambulance...for jaywalking or some kind of crap! There was a crosswalk and she had the walk sign (ticket was thrown out due to many witnesses...she said the witnesses were just furious how the cops were all enamoured by the driver!)
It's sooooo dangerous out there.

(3,937 posts)I got 2 -- her and her brother. Sometimes it feels like they have doubled the size of my heart and no matter how much I love them they love me back more:

(63,221 posts)I love lab/retriever type mixes. They are my favorites. My heart aches for a dog but I can't have one in my building (city living) plus I would want to have the money to have someone take care of them while I was at work. I think it is my main goal in life - to have a dog.
GreatGazoo
(3,937 posts)We think these are Lab x Golden x Great Dane (huge paws, ears, droop of the muzzle). Their mother is a black Lab but the father (?). It was an unplanned pregnancy and I love them. Love all dogs but especially mixed breeds.
One option for while you're at work may be to leave them with a neighbor, perhaps retired or home-based. Kind of nice for both dog and neighbor.
Tough to find landlords that take dogs now. I may need to move soon and I know my options will be limited when I do.

(15,882 posts)as if other people are going to act like they are supposed to is where I got some of my greatest calls when I was working on the ambulance.
Now, with 6 dogs, I realize I can't act that way.
I used to teach driving, and it was quite funny to watch the kids realize how bad everyone was around them. And why I used to wonder which of them was going to die before the next year, in traffic.

(15,243 posts)They found out that pedestrians have the right of way in a cross walk especially no lights, a lesson learned the hard way. My understanding most States the laws are the same. Since you were not charged with jay walking the burden should fall on the driver. Any time a driver hits someone and claims right of way in an intersection they are on very shaky ground. Get checked out insist on justice from the police and prosecutor. Not wanting to go to court or miss lunch is a very typical response from law enforcement. Luckily the person my relative hit was not seriously injured you can guess whose side I was on and it was not family. That driver needs a good legal attitude adjustment.

(3,937 posts)tape. Again, I think the guy just didn't see us for whatever reason -- not 'he saw us but decided it was okay make that left run and hit us.'
A cop came, ran the guy's license. Cop recognized me and my dog. There were 5 other witnesses, one of whom was walking 2 dogs across the street and dashed over to help keep the driver from leaving.

(8,175 posts)Two days ago I had to put one of my bottle baby cats down (renal failure) and yesterday I saw my Mom for probably the last time. She's in hospice and I can't travel that far (400 miles round trip) to see her for numerous reasons (no vehicle that can go that distance, and no public transportation to get me there), but my sis came to get me and I went down yesterday for a short six hour visit visit. She was asleep most of the time, so it barely registered to her that I was even there. I'm just glad I got to see her again.
I've been crying a lot for the last two days and my dog Rugby (who I ran over...later in this thread) comes to kiss me when I cry.
This was just too emotional for me. But it is a truly wonderful video and I'm glad you posted it.
I also have a yellow lab, and I think they have the most beautiful faces, and the most evocative faces, with their big liquid dark eyes. They remind me of a seal pup.
Thank you for this vid. I'm going to add it to my favorites and perhaps enjoy it later with a little less emotion in a month or two.

(33,982 posts)You might want to even if you haven't and the dog seems ok. An impact like that COULD, not will, but COULD bruise things internally, like the lungs. A dog might move on, seemingly ok for a while, but like a kid that breathes in a bit of water in a pool, gets out and seems fine for a couple hours, and then suddenly collapses, a dog that has been hit can collapse from injury later as well.
Pulmonary contusion, collapsed lung, etc. Dogs chest cavities are a bit different from ours, and more or less at bumper height.

(12,265 posts)The hardest thing my husband and I had to do is have the talk with our parents when it was time for them to give up their keys. We had hoped they would know when to stop but not so much. My uncle was the same way, a neighbor called my Dad and said my uncle was "hitting both sides of the garage as he pulled in and twice almost backed out with the door closed". We went over and took a look at his car, it had tons of dings in it and a crushed bumper. His garage was structurally compromised. Needless to say it took a great deal to get his keys but we did (he didn't have any kids or wife to do it). Dad took his car that day.
When Dad got bad it was harder. My father in law was really hard but we could not live with the idea that they could hurt someone.
So glad you both are ok.

Be careful on those poop runs.
It's been said in a previous post, but get yourself/doggie checked out - a full check out too. May not feel it today, but take it from one whose been there and done that - you'll feel it tomorrow. Don't be a macho man, go to the doc . These things have a way of creeping up on you as you further age and without a doc's visit to show you were considered enough , you may not have any basis for a future medical claim. Get thee to a doctor and a vet.

(8,175 posts)I am so glad you are both OK. That had to be a really horrible moment. For both of you, but especially you, thinking your dog was gone.
Not too long ago I accidentally left my back window down too far and my dog, upon seeing some neighbors walking their dog (a dog he knew and liked, and their brand new puppy), got so excited, he jumped out the window to greet them; but his foot went under my back tire and it rolled him over several times. I didn't see what got run over and I thought I killed him, and was so sick I almost couldn't get out of the car. I was so sure he was dead, because I saw him being rolled and thought he was having seizures. It turned out fine...no broken bones, just a scared dog with lots of road rash and a bad cut on his foot. I took him to the vet to make sure he had no broken bones. I'll never forget to put the windows up again...NEVER EVER EVER!
Anyway, I understand your panic and I'm so glad your baby is OK. And you too, of course. And I'm also soooooo glad you grabbed his license plate so he couldn't take off. Yes, some people really are too old to be driving, and they are out on the road anyway.

(3,937 posts)We were walking in the same area this morning and a man who witnessed the accident yesterday said that the front bumper of the car had knocked my dog down but she rolled once and got back on her feet. Oddly she seems to have no bruising anywhere. He said the car had approached the light while it was green and just made the turn without slowing at all. His own adrenaline shot up and he said it was as if he was seeing it in slow motion, knowing that impact was inevitable. I am so glad that I let go of her leash because that gave her the room to roll.
