August 6, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Today, the danger posed by nuclear weapons is as great as ever, yet few people survive who witnessed their horror.
Keiji Nakazawa's manga illustrates the true impact of nuclear weapons when used against a civilian population. It is vital reading for people of all ages, and especially for today's youth.
By keeping this tragedy in our collective consciousness, we can strive to never repeat it and guide humanity towards a course of peace.
With your support we hope to share the message of Gen with tomorrow's leaders.
Barefoot Gen is a very powerful manga. Nakazawa doesn't pull any punches. There's pretty graphic depictions of death, the mangled survivors, and even depictions of suicide. But, that's what makes this manga so powerful. Nakazawa's drew off his own experiences, as he himself was a Hiroshima survivor. It's one of those works I think should be required reading for every middle and high school in the United States As much as I would love to contribute to this campaign, I just can't afford to do it. The library I work at used to have this manga, but when our copies wore out a few years ago, we never bothered to replace them, as they did not circulate.
Just thought I'd put this out there. I know this is a cause near and dear to the hearts of many DUers.
