Citadel’s Confederate banner a ‘ticking time bomb’ (SC)

COLUMBIA — South Carolina’s sole Democratic Congressman said on Wednesday that the state is playing with a “ticking time bomb” by allowing the Confederate Naval Jack that hangs in The Citadel’s Summerall Chapel to continue to fly past the next legislative session.
U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn said from his office in the Midlands that state lawmakers should change the Heritage Act, which prevents The Citadel from removing the flag — even after the school’s Board of Visitors voted to take it down in June.
“I think it’s a bad omen,” Clyburn said. “When the Legislature gets back here in January, they would do well in removing that flag, because it’s a ticking time bomb” ...
