Muh... Who knew? Good to know.
I watched people hammering away at a car window trying to get a kid out of a hot car.

(17 posts)an emergency spark plug in my pocket. Not really. On my keychain, I carry a http://resqme.com/resqme/ that not only will shatter a car window to get me in or out, but has a seat belt slicer on it.

(39,961 posts)They make window breaking knives (one of which I carry with me) with a spike at the end to deal with windows and they usually have a seat belt cutter, too.
In a few words, this is bullshit.

That spike uses the same idea as a piece of porcelain. It is a very sharp point that can break the window.

(14,912 posts)That's nothing new though, I've known about that for at least 30 years. It has to do with the sound frequency of the glass and the ceramic piece of the spark plug.
I keep one of these in my vehicle, for myself, or to aide others if I happen upon an accident scene before emergency responders. It's called a Res-Q-Rench..

It's a great tool to have! I also have a slim-jim, or lock-out tool, too. Most people could be busted for possession of auto-burglary tools, but I still have my cards where I belonged to the P.W.O.F. (Professional Wrecker Operators of Florida), P.W.O.G. (Georgia) and the T.R.A.A. (Towing and Recovery Association of America)

(38,187 posts)Anything with a sharp point on it. The trick is to hit the glass with something sharp instead of a blunt object. It's good to know, but I'd hate to waste a spark plug that way.

(26,335 posts)Tempered glass is super strong - there is a video online of three or four people standing on a tempered shower door while it flexes between two 2by4 supports. Take the same glass at hit it with stone, porcelain or hardened steel at it will break in a million little pieces.
I use a spring-loaded center punch ( see below ) to mark tile for drilling. It has a hardened tip. It would also make short work of any tempered glass.

Grab a rock and throw it through a window
Open the hood of a car
Find the spark plugs
Disconnect any cables/covers
Find a spark plug wrench
Remove the spark plugs
Smash the spark plug covers with a hammer
Throw the spark plug through a window
Easy enough
Succinctly put.

It's kind of silly when there are other, more commonly accessible things to use to break a side window.
A screw driver, a claw hammer, a key, a rock even.

(23,156 posts)Using a large mallet? I'm just a girl and I could see immediately that something pointy would do the trick.
I rather doubt the only thing that's going to break a car window is a shattered spark plug.

(12,396 posts)No, I've never owned a gun in my life, nor anyone in my family, but to hear it from other people, at least one in three or four in a grocery store are carrying. In an emergency with NO other option, would bullets work?
